Harley-Davidsons for women and new riders
Jul 23 '00
There are many who tell women and new riders that if they want a Harley-Davidson they should buy a Sportster.
I do not agree.
I am a woman rider and have ridden motorcycles for years. I owned a Sportster as my first bike.
Although I loved my motorcycle, I bought it because it was low priced, not because I thought I should ride a Sportster because I was a woman.
Sportsters are 'sport' bikes. They are smaller than full sized Harley-Davidsons but are made for faster riding.
I also found that Sportsters are top heavy and just because they are smaller does not mean you will be more able to keep it from going down if it begins to tip, quite the contrary. This also means that the balance is not as good as a larger bike.
Sportsters are very much less comfortable to ride and there is a very big difference in riding long distances on a Sporty than a larger Harley. Sportys are much more suited for short trips.
I now own a Softail and the experience is so much better. It is actually much easier to ride than the Sportster, and SO much more comfortable.
New Sportsters are less expensive than new larger bikes, but I would rather have a used Softail or other larger Harley-Davidson than a new Sportster.
If you are a very small lady (or man) a bike can be lowered where you can reach the ground. Sportsters are not shorter than bigger bikes, just wider. If you really want a light and small bike get a small import. But if you want a Harley-Davidson, don't let anyone tell you that you should buy a Sporster.
