Take Off VS. Gas?

Well well, back to the old debate on which is better : manual or automatic.
I know, that I would definately drive manual. Unless I become a crabby old woman who is legally blind, I will always drive standard.

This is my side of the debate. I have had 3 automatic cars, and one manual. The first car I had lasted about 7 months, the second about 3 months, and the third about two months. Let me see... and the car I have now, which is manual, has lasted over a year. I think that because my car is manual, I take better care of it. Before I defend my debate, I'd like to give you some information about me. I work at a car detailing centre. I have driven everything, from a transport truck to a volkswagon. I find that the majority of cars are automatic. Even most sport cars are auto!!!

My Epinion is that manual is better. Now, this is only MY opinion. You are freely entitled to your own. But I think you'd better think twice when you're going to buy your next car. First, automatic is just...blah. It's the lazy persons car. Honestly. If you're like me, 19, you need a car that makes heads turn. Auto can do that, but usually when people find out it's auto, they just don't find your car to be 'all-that' anymore. Automatic is also a little more expensive in gas. Not all that much, but it is a noticible difference. My automatics cost about $20 (CDN) to fill almost every week. Also, automatics may get their nose off the line first, but they're usually the losers in the end.

Manual. Manual just rocks. I can fill up my car every two weeks (about 500+ kms). But it does cost me about $40 (CDN). Also, I may get a slow start off the line, but my car usually ends up the winner. Like I was saying earlier, if you're young like I am, you need a car that catches peoples eyes. I have a stereo system with whopping bass. And I have an exhaust that can be heard for a while. Since I'm a girl, I get the weirdest looks. And it's just the power that you get having almost full control of your car when you're shifting. You can gear up, gear down, and get better control either going up or down hills, and for sure, in the winter. The only downsides of manual transmission is that if you're in traffic, and you have a very stiff clutch, you're probably going to have a very sore leg, =) And also, when you're first learning manual, hills are waaaaay to hard. I had a hard time myself. The trick : have it in 1st, and the 'e' brake on. Slowly rev the engine and release clutch and 'e' brake at the same time. This is also a good trick if you're on a hill and someone's right on your bumper.

My car is a '96 Sunfire. My father is a car dealer and my mom also had a '96 Sunfire. Hers was auto, mine manual... I got better gas mileage, and always beat my moms car in a race. (shhh.... she doesn't need to know that =) ) So, from my experience, I believe that a manual car is better that automatic for many reasons. You find out for yourself.
