DO YOUR RESEARCH-NAME YOUR PRICE!

Mar 19 '00

I worked in dealerships for years as a title clerk and I have seen it all.
If you don't know much about buying a car, walking into a car dealership to buy one is literally like being thrown in the lion's den. You must do your research before even thinking about buying so the salesperson does not have the upper hand. Have a confident attitude, don't sign any paperwork until you thoroughly understand it.

Here is the method I use when buying a car.

RESEARCH: Get on line. Check out the vehicle you want (i.e Ford.com, Chevy.com) Make sure that this vehicle has the specs you need for your lifestyle. When you are sure of your decision go to Bluebook.com. Look up your vehicle's invoice value and suggested retail price and if you have a trade -in also look up that vehicle's trade-in value. Write this information down. Now you have an idea of the financial aspect of the purchase. You already have an upper hand.

SHOPPING: Armed with your information, go shopping. Visit several dealerships. Shop around. Take a couple of test drives to see how the vehicle handles (the only thing you need a salesperson for). Check out the SRP's against YOUR invoice value. Write your information down. Above all don't let the salesperson talk you into anything. Go home, have a breather and look over your information. At this point, you need to be certain that this is the vehicle you want.

DEALING: With a confident attitude inform the dealerships you visited of the price you will pay for their vehicle (contact the sales manager by phone). If after a couple of days you don't hear anything, call back and ask why your price is not adequate. This is where your dealing talents come in. You have the invoice price, you have their SRP. If they won't take $300-$500 over invoice, ask why. Now, if they accept your terms call the other dealerships back and tell them, ask them if they can lower their price even more.

This method has worked for me and I have never used the services of a salesperson. Just know your facts, be reasonable, be confident and you should come out on top.
