Remember Your Furry Friends

This is a subject that is often neglected by many, but drives me absolutely crazy. DO NOT leave your dog in a parked car in the summer. Even if the windows are open slightly, it will only take a short time, sometimes only a matter of minutes, for your dog to overheat and die.

About five years ago I was getting ready to leave work to go get some lunch. It was sunny and probably about 80 degrees that day. I walked past my boss's car and happened to look in the window and see his dog lying on the floor motionless. I had seen my boss leave with his wife in her car about three hours earlier to go on some sort of outing. I immediately rushed back into the store and called my boss on his cell phone. He was immediately alarmed that he had forgotten the dog, but said that he was an hour away and to go ahead and break the window. A coworker and I did so, but it was too late. It was probably at least 110 degrees inside the car and the dog was dead. Kind of a dark story, but also true.

Now I take my golden retriever just about everywhere with me and I know there are times when you just need to leave your pet in the car for short durations. Here's what I do: Keep an extra key in the car so you can leave the car and most importantly the air conditioner running while still being able to lock the doors. It may not be the most environmentally friendly thing to do, but it is better than the alternative. Also maybe consider leaving your pet at home. A friend who is lonely for a couple hours is better than a dead friend.
