Engine oil treatmentsDec 12 '00 Write an essay on this topic. To treat or not to treat, that is the question. How many times have you been flipping through the TV channels to see an advertisement for a engine oil treatment. As a mechanic and engine builder I have seen many products that claim to protect your engine or to help increase fuel economy. Most have seen ads for STP, Slick 50 to name a few. Some of these work some don't. Those who have teflon as an additive I would never use. For the teflon to adhere to the parts of your engine would require temperatures of approx 700 to 900 degrees,at this point there would be flames coming from under your hood. STP makes a good assembly lube, but if it isn't mixed with oil before its put into the engine it can settle to the bottom of the oil pan thus not mixing. After much thought I decided to give Prolong engine treatment a try. Oils are used to keep moving parts from contacting each other, thus providing ease of movement. Simple isn't it, not really. The film of oil is only about 1 1/2 thousands of an inch thick ( a sheet of paper is about 4 thousands thick). this thin film of oil is the only thing that keeps your engine from tearing itself apart. If this film of oil is removed the pieces rub together, causing heat to build up and wear. Prolong helps the oil to withstand the extreme pressures that are present on all the bearing surfaces thus reducing friction and heat, extending the life of all the moving parts I have used this product for two years now, starting with small engines, that have long duration run times with little up keep, and have seen a improvement in fuel useage and no major break downs. In automotive (cars, trucks, tractors, etc.)it has given a increase in power, lower operating temps(less friction) and better fuel economy. In one instance it saved me over $4000. in repairs and down time,A piece of equipment with a V6 engine that was treated with Prolong lost all the oil. (I screwed up,Didn't tighten the oil plug) This engine ran for about 25 minutes after it lost the oil before anyone shut it down. We just knew it was shot, but after pulling the oil pan and several bearing caps we found no major damage. We replaced the caps reinstalled the pan, filled it with oil and a bottle of Prolong and started it up. The oil pressure came up to normal and as to date is still working great, and it has over 500 hours of run time since my oops. Seeing is believing, and I now use this product in all my vehicles, lawnmowers and small engines that are not 2 cycle. As stated before there are many products on the market that make many of the same claims, this is one that follows through and does what it claims. I am sold on it. The only draw back is the price, at around $20.00 a bottle it may seem a bit high priced, but figure what a new engine costs, that changes things a bit. |
