Stay Awake!

Let's talk about one of the most deadly things happening on the highways today-falling asleep behind the wheel. Believe me it is very easy to do and takes no effort whatsoever. I am speaking about my own experiences. I had a job that required me to drive 65 miles to and from work everyday. The job hours were 9-5. I performed this for 2 years.
After a "normal" day at work, I started home around 5PM in January so it was already getting dark. About 1/2 hour out I found myself looking at the back end of a string of stopped cars and knew I was going to hit them. I was traveling about 40 MPH after just passing through a small town (why I took that route this particular evening instead of the freeway, I don't know.)
I braked as hard as I possibly could but still collided with the cars. My seat bag immediately activated and hit me in the chin knocking me unconscious. My face and neck were battered and bruised, two teeth were knocked loose. So much for my damage--my new car was totaled. This all happened in a few seconds. When I regained consciousness, there were people all around trying to find out if I was badly injured and what happened.
I couldn't answer that question then. Now I call it divine intervention. Thank God the people in front of me were ok! What happened I asked myself. The only possible conclusion I have reached is I must have dozed off. I awoke before the collision evidently through some built in warning device and averted a worse tragedy. I had no idea that this sleep was overtaking me. That is scary.
The fast pace of life and just not getting enought rest and being exhausted and keeping going anyway is a very dangerous situation. I think this happens more often than not--rather than people being negligent or reckless. Of course, sometimes it happens because of a medical condition.
I left the job shortly after that as the idea of a worse tragedy was too much to live with.
The point I am trying to make is know your limits and do whatever is necessary to live by them. Keep safe!
