Do you REALLY need that?Jun 29 '00 Write an essay on this topic.A brand new four wheeler or ATV can cost you as much as a good, used car. Most new models can't be purchased for any less than $5,000. That's a lot of money for something you can't even legally drive on most roads. When choosing an ATV, you must first consider what you will be using it for. Will it be for work, play, or both? If you simply want something for you to ride around in the woods on, you don't need anything heavy duty. In fact, the lighter the better, so that you can manage it yourself if it gets stuck or what-not. A friend and I recently had a big debate over whether or not the average person needs 4 wheel drive on a four wheeler. I say that it is really not needed unless you plan on towing something with it, or you will be hauling a lot of weight around (such as firewood). You must realize that having four wheel drive adds a good bit of extra weight to the front of the ATV, which will effect handling and the balance of the vehicle. Also, it makes it MUCH heavier. If you've ever gotten one stuck, you may hurt yourself trying to lift it up out of the mud. There is a good bit of variation with the size of ATV's. If you get the biggest thing on the market, you may be able to haul more stuff on it, but can you fit it through tight spaces in between trees and on the trails? This goes back to what you plan on using the ATV for. As a hunter, I mostly ride my four wheeler in the woods where there are no trails, so I don't need a big, bulky machine to sideswipe every little tree as I am trailblazing. However, the choice is up to you. If you have the money to spend, weight out the benefits and make your choice. You never know when you may need 4x4, but then again you never know when you may wish you didn't have it. You may think that buying a bigger four wheeler will let you ride two people on it, but this is considered unsafe and not recommended. My advice is to save your money and buy two smaller ones, rather than one big one.  |
