Pros: Narrow and maneuverable, solid ride, reliable engine, no rust, comfortable seating, cargo room Cons: Electrical problems, parts expensive, labor diagnosis expensive The Bottom Line: If you can find one with under 100,000 miles and no rust, consider it. Don't buy it unless a good non-dealer Volvo mechanic approves.
The 240 was a very basic, no frills model-- but that's part of the attraction for ascetics. We purchased a four cylinder 1991 with 73,000 miles in 1997. Now it has 133,000 miles.
It has served as my daily workhorse commuter car and still...

Pros: Great engine Cons: parts are expensive
I spent $7k on a '91 240 wagon. When people say that Volvo's last forever, they really mean the engine lasts forever - all the associated parts like the throttle valve cable ($250) and heater valve ($300) and in my case the transmission (~$1500) do not...

Pros: reliable, safe Cons: old styling, expensive parts
Volvo wasn't just another car in my family, I never drove a luxury car and even though 240 is not all that luxurious and it is a bread-and-butter car from Volvo, you have to drive it once to feel safe and confident.
Volvo cars are famous for...

For many years people have been telling me to get a Volvo, get a Volvo... so finally I gave in. About 4 months ago I bought my first Volvo. I searched and searched, and finally found one in southern Mass. It was a 1991 240 DL sedan. I instantly fell in...

Pros: Strong, Confident, Reliable, Safe!! Cons: Can get a little gas hungry with AC on
I own a 1991 Volvo 240 with 129,000 miles. It has been nothing but a blessing to me! I have never been in a vehicle that feels so sturdy and confortable. In the two years that I have had the car, I have seen new vehicles bite the dust!

Pros: safe, built to last Cons: slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, very uncomfy, butt ugly
My wife and I had 1 baby and another on the way. So we wanted a very safe car. We found a blue 240 for sale at a reasonable price so we bought it.
My wife loved the car b/c it looked sort of frumpy and funky and felt like a tank. I didn't...

My First (Unfortunately) Car

Pros: Durability (it just wont die!!!) and cargo area Cons: Electrical problems, hideous styling, horrible sound system, frequent trips to the shop
My mother drives a 1991 Volvo 240 station wagon. I learned to drive on this car, and for that reason I cannot completely insult it, but it has been nothing but trouble for me. The mechanics are AWFUL. It has broken down probably a half a dozen times in the past five or six years we've had the car. The sound system is terrible, and as of now, the radio doesn't even work. We have spent more money trying to keep the car running, than what it is currently worth. Although, it doesn't look like we're getting rid of it any time soon... it now has over 230,000 miles on it. The problems are not with the engine, but with the electricity. So if you don't mind driving without various lights and listening to random dinging sounds, this is the car for you.
