Toyota Highlander: Back to the drawing boards...

Jul 03 '02 - Updated Jul 21 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Fairly car-like ride and handling, fairly spacious
Cons: Steering kickback, artless exterior, lacks third row and cargo capacity of Pilot
The Bottom Line: The Highlander performs a bit better than the new Honda Pilot, but this cannot compensate for its less spacious and less stylish interior.

The hottest segment of the market right now is car-based SUVs. These are basically tall cars with all-wheel-drive. The idea is to combine the space and all-weather capability of an SUV with the ride and handling of a car. Toyota was one of the pioneers, ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Car like ride and handling, Roomy interior
Cons: Can be pricey, A Lexus priced car should have Lexus like service
The Bottom Line: An excellent all-around vehicle. Roomy interior with compact exterior make this a great urban vehicle.

Much has been made in recent years about “twin” or “cousin” vehicles; we’ve all seen them. Simply put, twinned vehicles are 2 or more cars or trucks that share the same basic mechanical architecture, but seem to look a little different. This was an all...

Pros: Toyota quality, tons of room and QUIET!
Cons: little pricey, availability
The Bottom Line: If you can bear the price, the quality is worth it!

I recently purchased a 2002 Toyota Highlander Limited after extensive comparison shopping, and had several different experiences with Toyota dealers.

In St. Louis, we are a mid size market and I visited six different Toyota dealers. This was...

2002 Highlander Plenty of SUV for Most Drivers

Jul 03 '02 - Updated May 15 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Carlike ride, smooth powertrain with V6. Quality apparent throughout.
Cons: Mundane styling, pricey w/options. No radio controls on steering wheel. Rear window doesn't open.
The Bottom Line: Nearly ideal blend of utility, ride, and handling. Can get pricey with options but still less than Lexus. Easy to handle and park due to nimble (Accord) size.

My wife got bitten by the SUV bug. She was eyeing the Lexus RX300, but we could not justify $40K for a car. Since there is just the two of us, a huge SUV was not needed. We settled in on the Toyota Highlander after reading many favorable reviews on...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Ride, comfort, appearance, utility
Cons: Price, option packages, interior color choices, road noise at high speeds
The Bottom Line: It's a luxury car at (high-end) Toyota prices. Toyota is a proven winner and this new model is no exception to the rule.

My other car is a 1997 Camry, and I think that the Highlander is a smoother ride. I love the fact that it doesn't feel like, look like, or drive like any other SUV that I have driven.

The V6 is pretty fast, the handling is very good (not...

Pros: Fuel Consumption, Fit and Finish, Size and Comfort, in TOwn Performance
Cons: Road Noise, Egress/Ingress, High speed passing
The Bottom Line: This is a 2003. THe full sized spare was, I believe the only change. I would buy two if I had another driver in the house.

I was in the market for a midsized station wagin to replace my trusty 95 Honda Accord LX wagon that was destroyed in an accident on Dec 28th. I Test drove the SUbaru Legacy wagon and noted that the design was identical to the pre Outback version I drove...

Pros: wonderful comfort, smooth power at all speeds, good handling,
Cons: no place for cell phone, air conditioner fan too loud
The Bottom Line: If you want an SUV, and don't anticipate any very hard off-road boulder bashing, in my opinion this is the very best.

I have owned a large variety of vehicles over the years (I have been driving since 1961), and my new Highlander really is among the very best. I took delivery of it in Tucson, Arizona, and immediately put over 2000 miles on it driving back to my home in...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Tons of room, Toyota quality, 4 cylinder plenty powerful
Cons: Exterior styling a little bland...do the Japanese not have 44oz Big Gulps?
The Bottom Line: If you want lots of space, a comfortable, non-truck ride and renowned quality, consider the Highlander.

My wife and I wanted something a little more practical than our Tacoma 4x4 to haul our 2-year old around in. We wanted to stay under $25k, so we started our search with the Saturn Vue and the Toyota Rav4. The Vue was nice, but there were a number of...

Pros: Safe, comfortable drive, roomy for all passengers, good cargo area.
Cons: Pricey (but worth it, IMHO) I rarely get to drive it!
The Bottom Line: Can't beat it for safety and Toyota's history of reliability.

When my husband and 2.5-yr-old son were t-boned in our 4-Runner last January, we had to buy a new vehicle.

We were very happy with the way the 4-Runner held up in the accident (no injuries, even though it was totalled), and since we know a...

Cons: Short supply leads to no bargains

Highlander's Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) System?

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Vehicle Skid Control, Build Quality, Dealer Discounts
Cons: No Third-Row Seating, Relatively High MSRP (Especially When Fully Loaded), new HONDA Pilot
The Bottom Line: If you don’t need the 3rd row of seats, and can negotiate a good deal from the dealer ($200 over invoice), the Highlander is an excellent choice.

I’m an admitted automobile safety fanatic. Although I’ve never been personally involved in a serious automobile accident, I understand that driving to (and from) work is likely to be the most dangerous task many of us perform each day. To help minimize...

Pros: 2WD and 4Cylinder gives plenty of power at a tremendous savings.
Cons: Wish I'd bought one sooner
The Bottom Line: If you want an SUV at a family car price and economy, consider dropping the 4WD and V6. You won't regret it!

My wife fell in love with the Toyota Highlander the first time she saw one. I was doubtful about the poor mileage and high maintenance costs of a 4WD V6 SUV. Since my wife is a teacher and her school is very close to our home, I felt 4WD was a bit of ...

Pros: Great ride, excellent sound system, big backseat, good cargo room.
Cons: Suspension sometimes TOO soft, exterior styling lacks soul, could use some more power/new tires.
The Bottom Line: Please see the paragraph above for my recommendation

The Highlander is great for those who want the SUV look, but hate the traditional SUV ride. Built on the Toyota Camry's platform, this SUV delivers a soft, quiet, car-like ride for everyone in it. It is also lower to the ground than most SUV's which ...

The Bottom Line: Spacey, luxurious, environmentally and economically friendly.

Cons: Small color selection, no radio control on steering wheel.
The Bottom Line: This is the best SUV value out there! Drive it once and you'll be hooked. Superior Quality!

Pros: Very smooth, very comfortable, very spacious, good craftsmanship, nice looking.
Cons: Feels like could tip when going around corners, some compartments too small.
The Bottom Line: This is a great semi-suv car. Very comfortable and very versitile.

Very luxurious car (it does feel more like a tall car than a truck) that would be a great addition to a family. A neat feature is that the front seats can fold all the way back, so you could fit something like a 10-foot in length object on the right...

Pros: Easy handling, safety size of an suv with ride of a car, attractive look
Cons: expensive, small cargo storage for size and price, cannot turn off passenger airbag.
The Bottom Line: Good for those with only one or no children as one car seat takes up a lot of room. Same design as 2003.

I was very excited about buying this (my first) SUV but I wish I would have taken more time to look into the space and safety features. I have a baby and though I have owned many Toyotas and really appreciate their quality, I believe Toyota should have...

Cons: Weak stereo, not as smooth as a Camry but great for a SUV!
The Bottom Line: Would recommend it for those who have never owned a Camry. I will not own another make other than Toyota. PERIOD! :o)

When my lease was up on my 1999 Toyota Camry I honestly debated whether to turn it back in cause I really truly enjoyed this car. I wasn't too thrilled about the new Camry's 'slicker' looks so I decided to go for a change and leased the Highlander. I...

Pros: Can't beat Toyota reliability
Cons: No real cup holders (not a big deal in the scheme of things)
The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone who needs the rear seat room an SUV provides, but also wants a vehicle that will long outlive the car payments.

After wrecking my last vehicle, I was forced into the wonderful world of car buyers. I knew I wanted a Toyota because I've had two in the past (and my family has had an additional 3), so the question was what kind of Toyota. Since I now own a house, a...

Cons: Rattling noises, seating not comfortable, & Cup holders in rear doors make a mess!
The Bottom Line: Rattling noises inside and poor cup holders positioning (splatter when door is shut). However, Toyota quality engine won't leave you stranded and resale value is HIGH.

I bought the SUV for the car-like handling and the ability to be comfortable traveling a lot. It does handle very well for an SUV, but the comfort isn't what I thought it would be. The controls are easy to use and within reach and the storage is ...

Toyota Highlander: Nice Vehicle without enough options
by ibandme2
Nov 09 '04
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Extremely dependable, Radio 6 disc CD player, Enough cup holders
Cons: With option package can be very pricey, Need more space in the hatch area
We purchased our 2002 Toyota Highlander in 2002. Since then we have been able to break it in. With 30,000 miles this vehicle is one of the best we have owned. The ride is comfortable. The front is roomy and the back is enough for our passengers. The features that we enjoy are the extras that we added on that became pricey for this vehicle. Toyota makes a great radio/cd player. We have the 6 disc that I find convenient for long trips. There are enough cup holders for everyone. :)

If we had to purchase another SUV/Car it would certainly be another Highlander.

'02 Highlander 4 cyl 4WD (Used Purchase)
by mensur071
Feb 17 '07
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Quiet, abundant interior space, 4WD, 4 cylinder economy, car like driving with SUV capabilities, reliability
Cons: Nothing yet.
I have been looking for a vehicle with high praises in terms of reliability and low maintenance, with SUV capabilities for winter driving while providing great fuel economy. This categorization narrows down the playing field greatly and the only vehicle that met these requirements was the Highlander. It's elevated stance and 4WD capability proved itself during a recent winter storm as it handled snow and ice conditions flawlessly. I am used to all wheel drive German sport cars and this Toyota doesn't skip a beat in contrast to those vehicles performance.

Highlander is a quiet vehicle that absorbs various forms of pavement anomalies. We like the fact that rear seating is abundant with the ability to fold rear seats down, which can absorb a lot of anything. So far only several hundred miles on top of the 70k we purchased it at.

Everything about the interior cockpit is where it needs to be, which required no time getting used to. This is a definite buy.

Finally - a SUV for the 'short people'!
by k92560
Nov 23 '03
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Comfort of interior and smooth ride.
Cons: Expected a little better gas mileage.
I purchased a 2002 Highlander (4 cyl) and have never looked back! I am only 5'0" tall and finally found a SUV that I don't need a ladder to get into. After owning 2 Corollas, I had the taste for a bigger vehicle. The Highlander was the only one that fit me, literally! I tried the Vue and 4Runner, but found both were a bit tall and rode like trucks. The Highlander provides a car-like ride with the lift of a SUV. The controls are all easy to see and access and even the 4 cylinder has good 'get-up-and-go'. I have taken several long trips well over 500 miles and driving this vehicle made all of my trips enjoyable with the roominess in the seat area and ease of the console use. Probably the first vehicle that I've felt totally safe in, even in our Wisconsin winters.

I've already been looking at the 2004 models!!
