Pros: Ultra low emissions, good gas mileage, nice car for the money. Cons: Eats expensive tires, technology failures expensive, tax deduction being phased out. The Bottom Line: Wait for technology to be perfected to avoid prohibitively expensive repairs and inconvenience.
I bought this car new in 10/02 while looking for, and failing to find, a Toyota Echo for a commute car. The Echo is a tiny gas-engined Toyota that gets over 40 mpg and, at the time, cost about $10K less than the Prius. $10K is a lot of gas, even at the ...

Pros: environmentally friendly Cons: pick up is a bit slow... not a lot of room The Bottom Line: While others are in traffic watching their gas tank drain/minute, you are comfortably pondering at which fancy restaurant you'd like to treat yourself to dinner that night.
I am the biggest conservationist you will ever meet I have to say. I'm not insane or anything but I definitely do my part supporting the green side of every action I do. When I first became aware of the idea of a vehicle being readily available to the...

Pros: MPG, quiet, roomy Cons: reliability, MPG The Bottom Line: Do not buy this car without absolute faith in your Toyota service department.
When the Prius was released in the US in 2000, I couldn't wait to get one. I test drove one when it came out, and was floored by the roomy interior, quietness of the engine, LCD display, mpg rating...this was the car of my dreams. The only negative I...

Pros: Clean, great mpg, stealth mode, Toyota quality. Cons: small 12 volt, soft OEM tires. The Bottom Line: Well put together car that carries the quality expected from Toyota. Test drive one, you'll like it.
Car is very cool. In my 9 months of ownership I haven't had one single issue. The first 5 services visits are FREE.. yes, FREE. That includes oil changes (unknown if this holds for 2004). Although you may have to point this out to the dealer doing ...

Pros: Ultra Low emissions, 100X lower than an SUV, Great mileage, I get 50+ MPG Cons: My quibbles: no cruise control and no folding back seat The Bottom Line: With 50 MPG, ultra low emissions, fun to drive and a $2000 tax break, The only other car I would even consider buying is the new Honda Civic Hybrid.
I have had mine now for just over a year and have put about 23,000 miles on it. I have read other reviews of folks getting far lower mileage than I do. I typically get about 50 to 51 miles per gallon commuting in the San Francisco area. My commute is...

Pros: Great gas mileage, cool technology, tax breaks Cons: Lousy cup holder, long wait for delivery The Bottom Line: If you're in the market for a roomy and practical compact car that will impress your geek friends as well, Prius is the one.
I learned about the Prius in a magazine article in March 2001. After a test drive of the 2001 model at my local dealer I decided to order a 2002 model on June 1st. I finally got the car on November 6th. Supposedly the waits are getting a bit shorter now,...

Pros: Great gas mileage and good for the environment Cons: Fairly expensive for an economy car, plus little quirks detailed in the review The Bottom Line: If you can stand the 3 month wait and need an economy commuter car, this is the one to get.
I just picked up my 2002 Toyota Prius 2 weeks ago and can't stop driving it. I'm actually finding excuses to run to the store just to take it out for a spin. All in all, I'm greatly satisfied with the car minus a few small quirks which I'm sure will be...

Toyota Prius 2002
Give to Caesar, what Belongs to Caesar.
Any member who has been reading my reviews knows that I am not a big fan of Japanese cars. There are two reasons for this, first in the early 70’s I owned a Datsun, (now they...

Pros: Gas Mileage, Low Emissions, Styling, Price Cons: Badly designed controls, Missing basic features, no improvements since 2001 model The Bottom Line: While I'm excited about the future of hybrid vehicles, I would recommend waiting for a more practical model to be released.
I wrote this review of the 2001 Toyota Prius almost a year and a half ago (in September of 2000), and it received a lot of attention. According to Toyota's web site, there aren't any improvements (or even changes, for that matter) between the 2001 and...

Pros: Good in Wreck! MPG's, Clean, Comfortable, Fun, Cruise, 6 CD Changer. Cons: Poor controls, rattles in doors and dash, non-linear braking, distracting lcd. The Bottom Line: I now know that it holds up well in an accident. Read the reviews and consider all angles. I will be buying the redesigned 2004.
On July 2, 2003 an irresponsible driver clipped me in the right rear while on the interstate driving 60mph. I went out of control and hit the wall on my left at 60 or so.
Both airbags went off, the right one breaking the windshield. The...

Pros: Eco-friendly, excellent design, surprisingly roomy, fun to drive, and great tax breaks! Cons: Probably not a good idea to repair at any place other than Toyota. The Bottom Line: Perfect complement to the family minivan. Great mileage on trips to school, work, shopping. All necessary features are standard. Excellent design and quality. Tax breaks keep cost reasonable. FUN!
Our 2002 Prius just passed 1000 miles, and it’s proving itself as an ideal around town and commuter car. The “Super Ultra-Low” emissions were a selling point for us – setting a good eco-friendly example for the kids seemed like a good idea.

Pros: mileage, comfort, low emissions, envy of my coworkers Cons: no center armrest, everyone wants to ride in my car! The Bottom Line: buy it for economy, enjoy it for comfort, but be sure the dealer's service department is good since you can't usually service it elsewhere.
After 2 years of driving my Prius in the city and on the highway, I still love it! When driving short stop/start trips, I get about 40 mpg, but with 20 minutes or longer of driving in the city, I'm averaging just below the posted mileage of 50 mpg. ...

Pros: coolest car I have ever seen. SULEV emissions, mileage, touch screen, fancy features all over Cons: It doesn't come in a convertible The Bottom Line: My recommendation is to go give it a test drive, that's the best way to be convinced.
I've been crazy about this car since I read about it a year and a half. I finally bought it a month ago.
SULEV emissions rating stands for super ultra low emission vehicle, which is next up from zero emissions. It gets the lowest emissions of any...
