I hate Camrys in principle, yet must highly recommend this car (SE V6)

by mkaresh mkaresh is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Nov 21 '03
Pros: Performance, handling, ride, room, comfort, refinement, workmanship, popular, and now price
Cons: Bland styling, ugly tail lamps, not the most exciting sedan to drive, popular
I’ve always had a hard time getting excited about the Toyota Camry, despite its ever-increasing level of technical perfection. It has always seemed about as appliance-like as a car could get. Two years ago when the car was redesigned, Toyota made a ...

An appliance with steering

by sfoltz , Jul 01 '04
Pros: Reliable and capable transportation. Well constructed and good for highway commutes.
Cons: A very "point A to point B" kind of car. Styling is bland and uninspired.
This review is the result of my eight days driving a 2004 Camry LE (Base w/ 4 cylinder) that I rented from Hertz at the Dulles airport in Virginia. I drove the car around the Washington, D.C. area as well as Western Maryland and South Central ...

2004 Toyota Camry XLE

by sibarry , Jan 29 '04
Pros: A great car with many amenities. The Camry rides and handles like a luxury car.
Cons: Front seat cushions a little short, and the door/steering wheel controls are not illuminated.
The last Camry I had was a 98 LE which I was very satisfied with. That car rode nicely, handled adequately, and got good gas mileage. I leased this 04 XLE (4 cylinder)in early December and am very pleased with the overall driving experience. Since ...

Wow, one solid, well- made car!

by kavikas , May 19 '04
Pros: Build quality, refined I-4 engine, refined powertrain, exterior appearance, gas mileage, ride and handling, value.
Cons: Highly functional but boring interior, non-ABS brakes.
I had just recently rented a 2004 Toyota Camry LE equipped with the 2.4 Liter four cylinder engine and automatic transmission. I have never drove any of the current or previous generation Camry's, so I was very excited to see what's so good about this ...

The Red Beauty

by tranbatuongsam , Dec 31 '03
Pros: it's a Toyota, quality, reputation for reliability, low maintenance, lot of car for your money
Cons: ABS not standard, alot of things are options, plain looking wheel covers, speedometer
update 04/24/04 The IIHS did side impact tests on 12 midsize cars. And the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry (both with side airbags) were the only ones the were rated good. So if you're safety concerned opt. for the side airbags on the Camry, its only ...

by bdarr , Dec 03 '03
Pros: Many conveniences. Affordable. Solid quality. Comfortable
Cons: "mushy" brakes (recommend ABS). Power steering a little stiff. Odometer displays only whole numbers.

Terrible Engine Hesitation and Brakes that have a mind of their own.

by orblackfz1 , May 03 '05
Pros: Lots of great features that you would expect in a $50,000 car for only $30,000.
Cons: Terrible hesitation, confused transmission and brakes that try to out think the driver.
At first we were thrilled with our new 2004 Camry XLE V6 that replaced our 1993 Camry XLE V6, but then we started noticing some very bad problems. First, the engine hesitation, that included a confused transmission down shifting and running the engine ...

Terrific Body, Engine and Drive. Boring Interior.

by saaketham1 , Sep 21 '04
Pros: Spacious, quiet cabin. Excellent finish, powerful ride. Very reliable, high resale.
Cons: Youngsters might want the V6.
Exterior Tall, graceful, expensive and powerful-looking. Clean, sculpted lines, looks much more expensive than it is. Exterior fit and finish is excellent! Paint is very smooth and waxing can help maintain it. Interior Dash: Plain, ...

A Very Well Made Car

by xiea , Dec 01 '04
Pros: Roomier, Reliable, Stylish
Cons: Lack of Brake Feel
Toyota vehicles have always been dependable. The 2004 Camry is no exception. Camry has three trims. The base LE, SE with optional V6 and XLE with optional V6. I recently bought a 2004 Camry SE and am very satisfied. I picked the SE trim because ...

An above average performer

by midnightlgnd , Nov 08 '03
Pros: Peppy base engine, Handling, Light (but precise) steering, Toyota reputation, Build quality, and Price.
Cons: Awkward facing interior center dash, Small Calipers on the brakes, and Loud highway noise.
The 2004 Toyota Camry is everything one could expect from a mid-size, non luxury car. Well almost everything. The Toyota fares above average from the competition in virtually all areas of distinction. The car is priced better, built better and handles ...

Keeps getting better

by midwesternguy , Oct 05 '04
Pros: Reliable. Comfortable. Quiet. Decent mileage. Great value. Nice improvements.
Cons: Not much. Speakers have muddled bass. Dash has nice materials, but still somehow bland.
My wife and I have owned Camry's for years. They're generally very reliable, but each model seems to have their own quirks. For comparison, a brief history of their relative merits: The 1987 model had a muffler that needed to be replaced about once a ...

Rented 2004 Camry for a day

by dmb2 , Jan 04 '06
Pros: PRO: well-equipped, quiet, 4-cylinder has adequate power.
Cons: CON: felt every bump, sensitive to cross-winds, long travel on brake pedal.
We are looking for a second car (used) that will be quieter and more comfortable on long trips than our 1999 Corolla, with more space for carrying stuff to the cottage and to visit family. We rented a 2004 Camry LE 4-cylinder for a day as a test. In ...

Surprise, Surprise! A Car with serious alignment problem!

by garunner , Aug 15 '04
Pros: Good price. Quiet.
Cons: Persistent pull to left (widespread, and difficult to fix)
Summary My Camry comes with this defect: It persistently pulls toward left on freeway and is extremely difficult to fix. This is not an isolated incidence. The same problem has plagued many Camry since 2002. Surprisingly Toyota does not know how to ...

It's like a trusted old friend

by rodaberry , Oct 10 '04
Pros: Fit and finish, roominess, quietness of ride, impressive power from the base 4 cylinder engine
Cons: Loose handling in tight curves, small outside mirrors
The first time I drove the 5th generation Camry was shortly after its release in 2002. It was a rental car with about 16 miles on odometer and I had a 75 mile drive on mountain roads to test it out. I was immediately impressed with the interior ...

2005 Camry LE Special Edition
by redthatch ,May 25 '05
Pros: Roominess for passengers and luggage. Quiet, smooth, comfortable, convenient.
Cons: Average braking (drums in rear)
Toyota made minor, but welcomed, styling changes in 05 as they did half-way through the model life of the previous Camry body style. Redesigned tail lights, head lights and grille help the appearance. The LE now has ABS (even though the 4 cyl still has drum brakes on the rear), 5-speed auto, keyless entry and audio controls on the steering wheel. The LE has all the needed features and you save money not paying for unnecessary luxuries like leather and sunroof.

I bought the Special Edition LE which Southeast Dealers are offering. It totally changes the appearance of an otherwise bland car. Ground effects, lip spoiler on the trunk instead of that ugly elevated thing the factory offers and beautiful 18" BBS wheels with low profile Michelins. I chose the new-for-05 Mineral Green color which I love.

I wouldn't change a thing other than adding disc brakes on the rear and Homelink, but those options aren't offered with the 4 cyl engine.
