Pros: V8 performance, off-road capability, on-road ride (especially air suspension), handling (among SUVs with low range) Cons: No third row, V6 performance, fuel economy, handling not as good with air suspension, styling
Back in World War II VW built a Jeep-like vehicle for the German army, and later sold a similar vehicle as the Thing in the U.S. (As a kid I loved those.) Yet the company took its sweet time getting a modern SUV to the American market, finally ...

Pros: Powerful V8, sporty handling, flexible suspension, plush and quiet interior. Cons: Station wagon styling, no in-dash CD player, no DVD navigation, heavier than the USS Nimitz
This is one of my favorite movie lines of late. I have obviously substituted the name of the vehicle here, however, I think the title is fitting based on the (admittedly short) hour I spent with the vehicle. I recently drove a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg ...

Pros: Solid, luxurious, advanced technological functions, feels like a luxury sports sedan, excellent off-road capability. Cons: minor bugs, VW service dealing with bugs and luxury customer expectations
V8, Reed Green with Beige Interior, with Premium Plus package, including NAV system and Premium Plus package. Have owned a Treg for 2 months as of writing this review. All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with the vehicle. There are some minor bugs ...

Pros: Quality, quiet, off-road ability, attractive, V8 exhaust note (really), sales department service. Cons: GPS, a serious defect for those who need a serious off-road/tourer.
I bought the Touareg because it seemed to be perfect for my business: land investment. It is an impressive off-road machine and a serene--almost silent--road tourer. The build quality is excellent, better than my 1999 Lexus it replaces. All this ...

Pros: The standard features including 10 airbags or air curtains that protect front and rear passengers. Cons: The center rear headrest blocks the view from the rear mirror.
VW did very well with this vehicle. Co-designed by VW and Porsche, the Touareg is a bit more attractive from the front than the Porsche version, though it lack the Porsche Cayenne's powerful engine. I test drove and or researched a number of ...

Pros: Solid body construction; good power, well-designed interior Cons: Unreliable, guzzles gas, 6-9 recalls or service bulletins first year, abysmal service
Have had this V8 with lots of options for almost 18 months. For the money it has great power and handling, and a decked out interior. Now for the bad part. My first V8 leaked oil into the engine within the first two weeks; the dealer took it back and ...

Pros: Reliability, comfort. Quiet ride. Safety features. Cons: Blind spots. Weak remotes.
I purchased my 2004 V6 Touareq back in September of 2003. I was one of the fist people to own this great SUV in my area. It has leather interior and almost all the extra options (no GPS). The looks and the idea of owning a German-engineered vehicle were ...

Pros: Styling, very luxurious, great handling and acceleration, extremely quiet and smooth powertrain. Cons: Poor gas mileage, only a single disk CD player in dash
I looked at the Volvo XC90 when I first decided on an SUV, in fact, I put a deposit down on one. However, after waiting two months, the dealer pushed my expected delivery date back two more months, I decided to reconsider my options. Fortunately for me, ...

Pros: stylish interior, great sound system, lots of room for 5 adults, great price tag. Cons: 6 cylinder
The new volkswagen touareg is a great car that fits the wallet! I just bought one and im very happy with it. It has to be the nicest interior I have seen in a sports utility compared to the BMW x5, and the Mercedes ml. And on top of that, its cheaper t ...

"04" Touareg MAJOR ONGOING PROBLEMS
by ikswejam ,Nov 15 '04
Pros: V8 great power, comfortable front seats, good fit and finish, quiet ride. Good cargo space. Cons: V8 gas hog, back seat has NO leg room and the seats are not comfortable.
Great exterior look. Tight seals, which of course is a great quiet ride. Solid vehicle with great fit. Make sure to get something other than continental tires!!!!
After the 3rd radio installed we finally got one that worked.Took 6 months to get the CD back that it ate. Then we had a speaker start to crack.
Transmission had to be reprogrammed. Front tires had to be replaced at 5000 miles. Dealer did not have the software or the equipment to do the alignment.
At 15000 miles and after 15 months of ownership rear tires needed replaced. Was told by the service manager that in a few years this is going to be a great vehicle.
For the same amount of money I have recently traded into a "05" Lexus RX330. Smoother, more comfortable and better gas mileage. Not to mention can use regular gas.

Great car, super fast with the V10 Diesel
by mesquitedt ,Aug 09 '04
Pros: V10 Diesel TDI - Very fast, great handling, comfortable, good gas mileage. Cons: Terrible GPS-Navigation system. Buggy electrical that the dealer is clueless about repairing.
One of the fastest cars I have ever driven. Even beats the Q45 V8. The V10 Diesel is very quiet and has better than average gas mileage, about 20 mpg, combined Highway & City driving. Great handling and corning at all speeds. Comfortable seats and is very roomy. The vehicle has weird electrical problems (lights & displays), that the dealer has no clue about resolving.

a very good "egg"
by missjazmyn ,Mar 28 '04
Pros: comfort, luxury, fun, stylish, exciting Cons: absolutely none!!!
i have had my treg for 4 weeks now...nothing but love. i look for reasons to drive and seek new knowledge about all of the interesting things that my v6 treg can do. i enjoy the great performance and the very comfortable ride each time i drive. i feel happy and calm every time i get behind the wheel. so far i have had no problems and have not had to deal with the dealership too much, which is another true test of consumer satisfaction. from the people i have talked to the dealer i purchased from has a good track record, so i am hopeful. i got the base model w/ no extras, but i have everything i could want. as for the rear seat headrests, they have remedied the problem w/ the full sized middle rest and the dealer should replace it w/ a smaller one. mine came w/ the smaller one.

Don't Do It
by genrulgeo ,Feb 23 '06
Pros: Great features (on paper) Cons: alignment nightmares, electronic problems, VW corporate refusing to accept responsibility
After a huge amount of research I turned in my X5 for a 2004 Touareg. Mt initial experience was great. I can deal with the constant error messages (Fault gear running workshop - what does that mean?) and recalls. However, the straw that has broken my back is the alignment. I am on my 4th set of tires after 30,000 miles, with the identical problem each time - bald on the inside edge of the front tires. After admitting responsibility for the first two repair visits, now VW says I "must have hit a pothole"! Also, I just learned today that the standard charge for a front brake job is $750.
I am going to fix the car and sell it as fast as I can (taking a hit on the poor resale value). I will never purchase a VW again.

VW Warranty is Useless
by rodenhuis ,Jul 09 '04
Pros: Does many things well. Cons: Expensive, numerous vehicle problems, lack of warranty support from VW USA.
Touareg - Great concept, fair execution, terrible service from VW. The car drives nicely, but has numerous problems, some of which VW refuses to repair at all. I experienced cracked wood trim, a steering wheel that was not straight,Bad windows washer, condensation in the headlights, bad sunroof seal, transmission shifting problems, tire balance issues, bad compass display, and a Nav system that is missing major roads (like 2 lane divided highways).

Headache after headache.
by myohmyohmy ,May 12 '05
Pros: Comfy front seats, screens for back windows, floor lighting Cons: terrible computer system, clunky feeling, no spare tire, no leg room, always in the shop!
We had this car for a year and a half. In that time we were at the service center almost every month. It had so many recalls to do with safety issues. We also had a huge problem with the internal antenna, which made locking and opening the vehicle impossible at times. The tire monitoring system backfired many times with false alarms of flat tires, malfunctioning tires and low tire pressure. Especially in the winter. We had problems with flat tires twice and that's when we found the lack of a spare tire a real problem. Lastly, Canadian customer service was terrible. I sent away for a lower headrest in the back which they worded as a safety issue and would send for free, yet never got it. They constantly argued with me and would not send it unless I paid for it. You would think for a car that I paid 64,000 for, they would keep their word on fixing the headrest. It is impossible to get anywhere with them. All in all we were terribly disappointed and felt unsafe. We ended up getting a Volvo XC90 two weeks ago. MUCH BETTER!
