Pros: Safety, interior volume, ride quality, third row available Cons: Handles like an SUV, unrefined engine noises, non-linear power delivery, rear visibility, third row cramped
The Volvo brand is more closely associated with safety than any other. Many people buy SUVs because they are perceived as safe. It seems a natural fit. Yet Volvo did not get a true SUV to market until 2003. (The station wagon-based XC70 doesnt ...

Pros: Safe, safe, safe. Feels solid. Nice looking. Reasonable to own vs. other SUVs. Cons: A bit truck like in the ride. Don't like the position of the seat recliner.
I still love the car. I cannot say enough good things about it. I love the service and enjoy driving it around. The ride is a bit truck-like in a sense, which I am not 100% thrilled about it but I find it acceptable. One of the main reasons I am ...

Pros: Safety, interior volume, third row, did I mention safety Cons: Not worth talking about.
This review is from someone who actually owns one, and not from a test driver. We own and drive a 2004 Volvo XC90 T5 AWD with Climate and Versatility packages. People buy Volvos for safety, and Volvo has made some breakthroughs with this vehicle. I tell e ...

Pros: This car's safety features, performance, fit and finish is fantastic - above and beyond all expectations. Cons: Could use a couple more inches of leg room in the 3rd row seats.
It has safety, for its driver, occupants and those around it on its mind first and foremost but the XC90 has the same class and style of even the finest piece of automobile engineering. A car designed for real world driving. Performance: This ...

Pros: Safety features Cons: Stereo system
I bought a 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 2.9L AWD with options. I didn't get the 7 seater due to the lack of leg room but the 5 seater is good enough for me. The leather seats are very comfortable with automatic adjustments. The problem with driving the volvo is ...

Pros: styling, safety, solid construction Cons: everything else
I've had my XC90 T6 for 4 mths now. Things I hate about the truck: 1. Very little storage space in the centre console; 2. Front dash is very boring (compared to the BMW X5); 3. Seats aren't very comfortable, lack of adjustable headrest; 4. The ...

Pros: Style Cons: Poor reliability
Gas mileage
Dealer Service
Electrical Problems
I've purchased the XC90 for my wife when she was 5 months pregnant. She was driving a 2002 ML320 and did not like the steering and a truck like feel. We should have kept it. We purchased the XC 90 (2005) about 30 days ago in Pasadena, CA and it has ...

Pros: Ride, safety, handling, quiet ride, space! Cons: Gas mileage.
We got this car last July (July 2003) when it had just come out. We were expecting our first child and wanted to get rid of my "tin can" Honda CRV. We looked at the Acura MDX, the BMW X5, the VW Toureg, the Explorer and Expedition, the Pathfinder ...

Pros: Great styling and does handle very well... Cons: Dash, running light switch location and dealing with Volvo
Love the body styling and purchased the running boards which only enhanced the look. The the vehicle could just be driven. This car has been in the shop more times than any other car I have owned - ever! The GM for Volvo seems to be less than ...

Beauty of this Volvo is only skin deep.
by toobee ,Jul 27 '04
Pros: Body Styling, Seat Comfort. Cons: Electrical issues, Steering/seat vibration, AC odor, Brake wear, Console and control design challenges.
Only had it since June 2003 (8,000 miles) and it's been less than satisfactory for a high- priced luxury SUV. Bought it because I thought it was the most unique and beautiful body design on the drawing board. I even waited to buy a 2nd year edition so they would work on the kinks. They have not. I am on my 2nd dealer service relationship due to initial lack of resolution. Volvo service simply does not care to help it's customers and have a "take it or leave it" attitude. I paid for a Ford quality vehicle under the Volvo brand. Had Jeeps for 14 years and NEVER experienced this kind of normal operating difficulty. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SUV TO ANY OF MY FRIENDS OR FAMILY. I really wanted to love driving this vehicle.

Excellent Vehicle
by odba1 ,Feb 18 '04
Pros: The whole car is! Cons: Need more storage space upfront.
Read a lot about the car ,watched presentations in Europe and on driving range.
Bought among the fist 10 in the city where I live....have driven it for 12 months and 27,000 miles.
The best car buying decision in 10 years.
Handling and riding are great.
NO REGRET AT ALL.

wheel bearing failure - qtango please comment
by kentmilani ,May 26 '04
Pros: looks nice and has advanced safety equipment Cons: poor fuel economy, poor performance
I had a rear wheel bearing fail and it ruined the brakes too... 37,000 km / 23,000 miles on the vehicle. Volvo dealer does not want to submit on warranty, as they claim that my non-Volvo wheels caused the failure. The wheels are made by Mille Miglia and recommended for this vehicle.. and they have only been on the vehicle for 2,000 km! I suspect a faulty bearing.
I bought these wheels because they looked good and were less money than Volvo dealer's steel wheels + hubcaps, but if I can't get this resolved, it will have been a big mistake

2004 Volvo XC90 HORRIBLE! Save your money!
by pvillemom ,Jan 21 '04
Pros: NONE! Cons: Every last thing about it!
We purchased a 2004 XC90 in May of 2003. Our nightmare began about 4 weeks later when we experienced a loud knocking noise coming from the front of the car. Let's put it this way.......it's 9 months later, and after 4 lengthy stays at the dealership, and HORRENDOUS treatment from the dealership and Volvo Corporate.....we are getting rid of this lemon of a car. Save your $$, keep your sanity!

2004 T6 - A Fine Car
by m1rate ,Jan 31 '04
Pros: Versatility, stereo, fit & finish, safety. Cons: No place to stow the cargo cover when 3rd row up; somber center dash console.
I bought this car after being side-impacted in a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My focus has always been safety; after the accident, there was no question: Volvo was the car to buy. Amazing how a trip to the hospital can focus priorities for an everyday car. Want sports car fun? Buy one, and use it on occasion. But this is a wonderful, classy, workaday car. Beyond that, the fit and finish are outstanding, the interior materials appropriate to this class and cost, and the power and handling superior in every way to American SUV's. Besides, SUV owners should not be out to race--if they are, they bought the wrong car. The XC90 has great seating and hauling versatility without being a lumbering behemoth. Visibility is good with rear headrests down. I bought every available option except the "security" package, and am very pleased. Great stereo, great seats, and great looking. Actually, just a great car. Anyone who can't see this is looking for something other than this purpose-built, mission-accomplished SUV.

worse car ever owned
by jgtango ,Jan 28 '04
Pros: styling and safety (I wanted to like this car) Cons: customer service is awful, they said "I shouldn't have bought a first year car".
xc90 T6 auto,AWD premium. replaced computers, seat belts jammed, replaced air bag module & tires (excessive wear(no thread) at 10K) excessive turbo lag and noise, replaced transmission, intake manifold gaskets, wheel bearing, drivers seat reclined while driving, handle for booster seat came out, shocks & catalytic converter came loose. two inches of snow and car can't get out of my driveway. Previously had jeeps and 4runner no problem in 12 inches of snow without any problem. Volvo now taking it back as lemon law car.

Good value for a practical SUV
by kmhasan ,Mar 12 '04
Pros: Plenty of cargo space, Roomy. Practical. Good handling. Not too big. Cons: poor mileage, Very Bad service and dealerships
Don't buy from Dulles, VA dealership.I bought my car, the rear seat leather had scratch on it.It took them 6 months, several calls to the dealership, and to the corporate to fix it. Flat Tire: The service manager BJ said bring it in right away, we will have you out by the end of the day. I drove over to the dulles location, only to find out after waiting 20 min that they actually didn't have the tires. Our cd changer stopped:Deck Error. Took it to the dulles location again. Got a a rental car that had used tissue paper, smelled of cigarette and was filthy all over. Found later that it had supposedly some lose change in it that noone had actually seen, only hear something lose inside. and that I would have to pay 511 dollars for a repl.I naturally insisted that without proof of actual neglect would never pay for what should be covered under warr. Offcourse, they said will try to get the change out.Upon pickup they had a nice shiny quarter on the dash, and said that there is still some lose change in there, but is no longer making any noise.cd still broken.

XC90 worse suv ever
by cobez ,Mar 10 '07
Pros: Like the three rows of seats. Cons: Can't drive it in more than 2 inches of snow, otherwise you will get stuck.
Had many issues and getting stuck in more than two inches of snow. After 25K miles had to replace the tires because the threads wore away. Spent $56,000 dollars for a vehicle that can't go through snow and bad tires. There is a pause when the vehicle needs to change gears.
Bought this vehicle for my family to be safe in. However, since it can't drive in more than 2 inches of snow it kind of defeats the safety feeling.

The BEST mid-sized SUV ever!
by danush69 ,Jun 29 '04
Pros: Almost everything is excellent! Great customer service by Volvo dealerships. Cons: None I can think of.
I purchased my truck in early January of 04, during the midst of heavy Winter. It handled so well on snow and I could not have had a better driving experience on snow. It is very spacious inside with luxury comforts that a SUV could have. I love everything about this vehicle and could not recommend a better mid sized SUV. Safety, performance and looks wise, I think it is superb!

Great, Awesome Luxury Car
by reff55 ,Jun 16 '07
Pros: Can't say enough about this car. Comfort and great mileage on hwy Cons: Blind spot on the drivers side.
We purchased the 2006 Volvo XC90 2.5T with 8500 miles. This car was a loaner and is in immaculate condition. The car drives like a Lincoln Town Car (smooth) and performs like a BMW. If you are looking for comfort, safety and a solid crossover, this car is for you. The stability and "solid" driving and corning capabilities. Also like to room with all back seats down. The safety with air bags also played a part of our decision. A luxury Cross-Over
Looked At: Honda Passport, Toyota Highlander, Nisson, etc.

Terrible car! Unreliable and unsafe
by unsafevolvo ,Apr 27 '04
Pros: Less than 1 year old Cons: Car is a lemon
We purchased the Volvo XC90 T6 AWD. We thought we were getting the top of the line vehicle from Volvo. What we got was ten months of headaches and counting. The other reviewers are correct when they say the dealerships are lousy when it comes to handling the recurring problems: turbo lag, vibrations, noise, door panels falling apart, driver side electrical panel short circuiting, speakers falling apart, tire blowout. It is incredible. They deny that the car is a lemon and the Volvo service representative refuses to meet with you. I would definitely stay away from the XC90 and Volvo in general.

Excellent SUV After 14 Months and 26k
by hmssaab ,Feb 08 '05
Pros: Solid Vehicle, Smooth Ride, European Styling, Safety, Good Gas Mileage for SUV, Seating Arrangement Cons: Tire Balance
I am puzzled by the negative reviews listed along with the positive ones. I have owned and driven this SUV for the past 14 months and am very happy. The vehicle is as tight as the day I bought it 26,000 miles ago. Maybe it has something to do with the dealership. Secor Saab/Volvo in New London, CT is excellent has they have been with all my other cars in the past. The SUV is very spacious, quite and comfortable. The ability to haul with kids and not being tight for space is exceptional. The offset crash test data from the IIHS web site is very impressive. The only thing I can site is the tires having to be balanced every 10,000 miles, but I do get 30,000 miles out of them. The gas mileage is not bad either, 23mpg on the highway with the T5 motor.

A great, solid ride
by pbwriter ,Aug 10 '05
Pros: Safe, attractive, and comfy Cons: Slight blind spot
After much research, we bought a certified used T6 with all the options except navigation. We have been very pleased. We are long-time Volvo owners, and usually buy new, but this car was immaculate, and came to us with only 25K miles. It is rock solid, and not so much as a bulb has burnt out. It has enough horsepower for us, and we find that the transmission ratio is just fine. It is a little truck-like in ride, but hey, it is a truck, not a car. The hauling capacity is great, and with the half tailgate, it is easy to load. The seats are comfy like all Volvos, and this one is very safe, with one minor exception. There is a bit of a blind spot, particularly on the driver's side. You do have to be very careful, and I would like to see Volvo correct this in future models. We kissed a lot of frogs to find this prince of a car, and we expect to drive it for at least a decade. Given our experience with Volvo, it will be barely broken in by then.

volvo xc 90 2003 transmission problems
by angie11111 ,Jun 18 '08
Pros: Good Looking. roll-over feature is great. nice interior and speakers Cons: Headlight replacement: 500.00. New Transmission: 5,000.00.
Don't buy this year model or those years around the 2003. The transmission will fail. Mine just did at 70,000 miles. Supposedly, the transmission is a GM that doesn't have enough power to pull this heavy car.
