The Bottom Line With some extra time and attention, pampering your feet is well worth the results.
As winter is upon us once again, so is the potential for dry, cracked skin around the soles of the feet. Here is my cure-all remedy. First slough away dead skin with a pumice stone. If you don't already have one, buy one at your local drug store or beauty supply. It's good to soak the feet once in a while in a simple foot bath to soothe tired feet overall. All you need is a basin (an inexpensive plastic salad bowl will do) and some warm water. Add bath oil or your favorite liquid soap and soak away. For a full treatment, try the remedy as follows. Dry feet off and slather down with either a body massage oil like The Body Shop massage oil (which can be customized-fragranced with their perfume oils) or a moisturizing lotion such as The Body Shop's Peppermint Foot Lotion, a nicely moisturizing cream with the sharp scent of peppermint. For extra deep conditioning, slather your feet with petroleum jelly, especially among the cracked and dry parts, and put on a pair of cotton socks that aren't too tight at the ankles and sleep in them overnight to let the vaseline soak in. In the morning, wash your newly softened feet. A treatment like this during the harshest of winters can work wonders for the feet. For a special treat, massage your feet or better yet, get someone else to do it. Ladies may want to do a pedicure and paint your toenails a fancy shade. Go over toenails with a nail trimmer and be sure to get toe jam and gunk out! Make sure you wear shoes that are the correct size. If they're too small, your shoes can cause damage such as bunions and unnecessary calluses. If you need to, buy some insoles to make dress or work shoes more comfy. Take care of your feet and in return, your feet will take care of you. |
