Serious Skin Care - well maybe?

Jan 05 '01

Note: Since there isn't a product category for Serious Skin Care I decided to add my review here. I noticed that many others have done the same.

The beginning. As a teen I experienced some minor breakouts with my skin. Never anything bad enough to be considered full blown acne. As I aged I assumed my skin would just get better and better and eventually be pimple free. However I learned over the year that just doesn’t happen for everyone.

I am now beginning my 30's and my skin seems to be the worst it has ever been. I have daily breakouts and my skin is just awful. I think I have tried every type of acne medication on the market. Some are really good at getting rid of blemishes once they are there but I am yet to find a product that will keep my skin from getting them. I am currently under the care of a dermatologist and have been through all sorts of treatments to be left right where I started. I still don't have what is classified as acne however I get new pimples almost daily. I mostly breakout around the outer line of my face. The neck area, the lower parts of my cheeks, the area between my eyes and ears and upper parts of my forehead. With the dermatologist recommendation I have been on several different types of acne medications (pills) and have not had any luck stopping my breakouts. The pores on my skin in several areas are also larger now due to the years of problem skin.

The newest product that I have recently tried is called Serious Skin Care It is distributed by a company called Flageoli LTD and is sold exclusively on the Home Shopping network. I had read several epinions here as well as watched their infomercials on cable and wanted to give it a try. They use ingredients like Sulfur, Salicyclic Acid, Benzol peroxide, and Glycol to help rid your skin of blemishes. There are quite a few different products in their line. Since I was new to them I decided on going with a starter combo pack instead of buying the products individually. They are quite pricey and I found it cheaper to get them in the package deal. I paid about 30.00 plus shipping and this is what I received:

A 2 oz bottle of Cleasrz-it
A 1.5 oz bottle of Dry-Lo (sulfur drying lotion)
A container of 48 Acne treatment pads with salicyclic acid
A pack of 25 Glycolic Kleen Cleansing Cloths
A 5 oz tub of Triple Acting Glycolic Mask
And a cute little blue tote that is actually to small to hold more then two of the products in it at the same time.

I read the information that accompanied the products and began my use of them. The Glycolic Kleen Cleansing Cloths are to be used throughout the day when you wish to give your skin a cleansing. Perhaps after a workout, or if you discover some oily residue throughout the day and want to freshen up your skin. To be honest I didn't like them. I found the smell of them to be unappealing and the texture of my skin after using them wasn't what I hoped for. I really thought my skin felt oilier after wiping with them.

Next is the Triple Acting Glycolic Mask. This is a thick green goop that you spread carefully over your face. I found it to be similar to a chemical peal I once had. You apply it then wait 5-7 minutes for it to dry and then wash it off. It burns! Really burns, the same as the chemical peel I had at the dermatologists office. The only difference is that after a few seconds the burning stops with the Triple Acting mask. Once the allotted time was up I washed it off. My skin did appear shinier and felt really clean and fresh. The smell wasn't very bad and I did enjoy the results that I got. It helped to minimize the larger pores on my skin and gave me an overall nicer look. I will most likely continue to use this product on a regular basis. It’s made to be used once or twice a week.

The Acne treatment pads are similar to the ones that Oxy or Clearasil puts out. They are small in size and you are supposed to wipe them over your face 1-3 times a day. They do seem to give your skin a quick healthy look but after a few minutes it disappears. I didn't find them to be any better then the one's sold in the store and I won't continue to purchase them from HSN due to their high price (Around 7.50 for the container). If I decide to keep using them I will instead purchase the one's made by Neutrogena or Clearasil.

The bottle of Clearz-it that was included with my package is something I am still deciding if I like. It is a white cream that you apply to the affected areas of your skin. It works as a medication to heal and get rid of the bacteria that causes pimples. Although I do think it works I also am prescribed Retin-A from my dermatologist and find that to work a bit better then the Clearz-it so I will most likely stick with my Retin-a rather then buying the Clearz-it too. There is no scent to the Clearz-it and I absorbs into the skin quickly leaving no traces behind.

The Dry-Lo is a sulfur based drying lotion. It comes in a bottle that reminds me of foundation. It has a skin color to it but is separated. What I mean by separated is that there is a clear liquid at the top and a foundation type liquid at the bottom. Right on the bottle it states that you are not to mix it up. They want you to leave it separate like it is. You stick a Q-tip into the mixture making sure to touch it to the bottom where more of the sediment is built up then as you pull the Q-tip out it passes through the clear liquid. You then take the Q-tip and dot it on all of your pimples. What happens is overnight while you sleep the mixture gets in to your pimples and dries them out. While this does help you to get rid of your pimples quicker it also creates sore like scabs on your skin. So I can't recommend using this product if you are going to be out in public or around anyone for a few days that you wouldn't want to see your scabby pimples. It also has a very bad aroma that seems to get on your pillows while you sleep. I find it to be very similar to Origins Spot Remover and I personally prefer Origins to this, due to the stinky smell. I haven't found it to work any better then theirs.

After trying some of the Serious Skin Care line I have discovered that while they do make a few products that are good for healing up pimples they really don't offer you anything to use daily to prevent pimples from forming. I most likely won’t spend anymore of my money on them except for the Triple Acting Glycolic Mask, which I do find to be a great way to get a healthy look to your skin. It is like having a chemical peel right in your own home. Only you don't get the peeling a few days later like you do with the Real Chemical Peels.

I still believe that washing your face at least 2-3 times a day and minimizing make-up wearing to only when your out to be the best route in keeping breakouts to a minimum. Also always be careful not to touch and lean your hands against your face as oils can get trapped into you skin causing flair ups. To find out more information about the Serious Skin Care products you can visit HSN’s Website at: www.hsn.com Just type in Serious Skin Care in their search box and you will see a whole listing of all the product they sell. Also listed there are their ingredients and prices.
