NO-AD Aloe Vera Gel
This soothing cooling green after sun product is a constant companion to Florida and other hot climates. It is a combination of Aloe Vera with a local anaesthetic (lidocaine hydrochloride). Our chosen format was a 16 ounce plastic dispenser bottle.
I would agree entirely that the mainstay of 'sun burn relief' is avoidance. Don't get burned in the first place. HOWEVER ..... !
The whole family have found it comforting when applied liberally after a day at the beach or by the pool. It is also very useful to reduce the irritation from minor cuts, burns, insect bites and other skin condition.
There is a theoretical risk of absorption of the local anaesthetic, particularly through inflamed skin although the dose involved is minimal. There is also a theoretical risk of eye irritation (wash thoroughly if affected) from the other ingredients. None of the family has exhibited an allergic reaction through regular use. It has not stained clothing or other delicate fabrics.
NO-AD also produce other sun care products in no nonsense packaging. I suspect there is also little difference in the contents in comparison with other proprietary brands.
I have tried similar gels (Hawaiian Tropic’s blue one) from different manufacturers and although the results are very similar I am impressed with Solar Suncare’s mission statement “Do you really want to pay for glitzy ads and overdone beauty pageants? NO-AD”. 5% of the company’s profits are donated to drug and alcohol addiction programs in the US. These products are now becoming available in the UK – again without formal advertising. I wonder how successful they will be. I wish them well over here.
