Lund - A Life Long Investment

Dec 15 '00

I am the proud owner of two Lunds now. I purchased a small 14' V bottom over ten years ago and just got a new 18' V last year. I live in northeastern Ohio and fish many inland lakes as well as Lake Erie and the Ohio River. My combination of Lunds has all of my friends jealous and takes me from bobber fishing small ponds to trolling the Great Lakes. My 14' was the bare bones V 14 Deluxe model. I upgraded it myself adding a raised casting platform up front with battery storage underneath to balance the weight of the boat. I also added two power raised pedestal seats, an electronic command center and a bunch of other goodies. The 18 footer is the Fisherman model with a 90 HP Evinrude pushing it. A marine radio, downriggers, rod holders and fish finder were about the only add-ons needed.

These boats are very well built and I've had zero problems with either. The 18' is a wave crashing son of a gun. Although I would not recommend this, it has seen waves in the six foot range and I'm still here to tell about it. The 14 footer has seen some big water also and has never let me down. The only maintenance that I have to perform is tightening up some screws and bolts on occasion when they work loose from the pounding of rough water. These are by no means speed boats. If you are looking to really cook across the water, Lund is not for you. They are built so heavy that it takes big HP to push them. My 18' with 90 HP tops out around 35 MPH. If you are looking for a reliable boat that can handle poor conditions, then Lund is for you.

We can't forget price. The 14 footer was bought new in 91. With an Evinrude 9.9, live well and one pedestal seat it was around $3000. With the upgrades that I made to it I have no doubt that I could sell it for at least $3000 today. Not a bad investment. The 18' with an Evinrude 90, two big live wells, tons of storage, fishfinder, 4 pedestal seats, lockable rod storage and am/fm CD player was $18,500. Again, not a bad investment when you consider that I'm confident I'll still have it in 30 years.
