| smallmouth's Full Review: Lowrance LMS350 GPS Receiver |
The Lowrance LMS 350-A has proved to be the best depth finder I have owned. I have owned depth finders from Hummingbird and Eagle as well. I think that the purpose of these sonars is not to find fish where a picture of a fish comes on the screen and you cast to it, but to find structure where fish should be.
It is very important to use a sonar system for this purpose; otherwise you might be wasting your time. I have actually met people that stop the boat and cast to everything that looks like a fish on the screen. They don’t understand how sonar works.
How a Sonar works:
A sonar works like this. Your system is connected to a transducer that is connected to the bottom of the boat or the bottom of your trolling motor. The transducer sends a pulse down to the bottom at hyper speed. The pulse hits something and bounces back. The time that it took for the pulse to bounce back then is calculated in your screen as the depth. It is then showed as a picture or as a number.
Since the pulse is always bouncing back and forth if it hits a fish the machine will calculate it as a fish and not bottom. That is if it is a good machine. It therefore will tell you the depth of that fish as well. The thing that some people don’t understand is that if the pulse hits a leaf halfway down or a weed or anything, it is programmed to show you a picture of a fish. Anything that disturbs the pulse comes back as a fish.
The thing I like about Lowrance products and this sonar in particular is that it shows the pulse disturbances as the size of the disturbance. This lets you decide what it is.
Problems with this Depth Finder?
I had one problem with this depth finder. It had fogged up on the display screen behind the glass. I could still use it and see the display but it wasn’t perfect. For over $300 I like things to work perfectly. I sent it back to the company with a letter and they returned me the next model up with no charge and a letter of apology. I was very pleased.
About this Depth Finder:
The screen size is important to me. I tend to move around my boat and can’t afford to keep my nose on a small screen. This depth finder has a large screen and many light or dark settings so I can easily read it no matter how far away I am on the boat. That’s another thing about it. It has about a million settings. If you are into all that reading of the booklet that comes with it than you will like it. If you are not, you will like it as well. I don’t read the booklets from front to back and I get all I need from this depth finder.
It has a light button with setting from dim all the way to bright, it has a loud or silent button for warnings, depth warnings, a speed button, basically this has all the whistles and bells. It has improved my mobility with my boat and it has improved my fishing.
