The Three Little Pigs have a sister? You betcha and she's a feisty one.
My mother gave us this book for Christmas and she bought seven other copies from Amazon.com. I can understand why and can not believe I had not seen this book sooner.
This is a new take on the story of the Three Little Pigs and this book by Teresa Celsi titled The Fourth Little Pig is perfect for the pre-school set or beginning readers.
Three scared little pigs hole themselves up in a brick house owned by pig #3.
They bolted the windows and locked the front door. "We won't go outside," they said. "Not anymore." They stayed in that house at the top of a hill, and those three silly pigs would be hiding there still -
Well, there was a knock, knock at the door and Pig Four, their sister appears clad in a safari hat and backpack. Quite perturbed to find her wimpy brothers scared and hiding behind furniture. Taking on a commanding stance she tells them,
"You can't spend your whole life just sitting and shaking. There are places to see and things to be making." "You can build a canoe or go out and buy fudge." But despite her suggestions, The boys would not budge.
The three brothers sit on the couch imagining life out in the real world being served that fudge on a platter by a wolf disguised as a delivery boy. They demand that Sister keep the door shut exclaiming that they are perfectly safe inside, thank you very much.
"You're hopeless!" their sister cried out with a frown. Then she huffed and she puffed and she blew...their...house...down!
And, dang, if she didn't do just that. The force of her breath is quite evident in the adorable watercolor illustrations. One would think a tornado had blown through. And, to prove how right she is she exclaims,
As soon as the dust had started to clear, Pig Four said, "You see, there are no wolves out here."
Well, lo and behold, Sister...you're right. The three pigs are perched behind the low lying walls of the shell to their home. Surveying the horizon to insure Mr. Wolf is not going to pop out from any nearby bushes.
"Hooray!" cried the brothers. "How happy are we! For the wolves are all gone, and now we are free." "We won't spend our whole lives just sitting and shaking. There are places to see and things to be making"
Big Sister stands by smug as a bug in a rug. And the story continues ...while the boys take to the road one way, Big Sis heads off into the sunset, off to continue her worldwide adventures.
My mother inscribed this book for my daughter: Christmas, 1999 May you be a little explorer - full of joy and love. Ah, yet another subtle message from Mom.
This is such a good continuation of the Three Little Pigs and the illustrations by Doug Cushman are a marriage with the text. The Duo of Celsi and Cushman is perfect. Descriptive, entertaining and perfect for the little ones and for me, the reader. We have the paperback edition which was published in 1992.
