| etain's Full Review: Sandman: Brief Lives |
About four years ago I had a new roommate who had amassed the single most impressive comic book collection I had ever seen. But prominently placed in his bookshelves were some volumes devoted to a character called SANDMAN. In addition, he had a publicity poster for BRIEF LIVES on his bedroom door. He caught me looking curiously at it one day and handed me the book.
Somehow Neil Gaiman has downloaded every major world myth cycle into his own brain and has synthesized them all into the series. BRIEF LIVES is far and away my favorite, chiefly due to one segment in the middle -- the plot visits the ancient Babylonian love goddess Ishtar, who in modern times is working at a strip club because it's the closest approximation to her ancient temples. She's downplaying what she's about and is only half-heartedly into it -- then one night she receives a visit from some old friends that causes her to show an audience what REAL erotic power is. It's not just a great story, it makes a very powerful statement about women's sexuality.
And this is in a bloody COMIC BOOK.
SANDMAN is simply an amazing series; well drawn, COLOSSALLY impressively written. This is the best of the lot.
