| jiastar's Full Review: A Witch's Brew: The Art of Making Magical Beverage... |
Did you know that we have been brewing "beer" for 8000 years?? Ms. Telsco shares this tidbit of information along with many others in "A Witch's Brew". Beyond just a cookbook, or a collection of drink recipes ... Patricia Telesco has created a book which not only shares close to 200 pages of beverages, but the history and folklore associated with various drinks. In addition, sprinkled throughout the book are interesting tidbits and quotes which keep this book from being dull.
Replete with easy to follow instructions as well as tool and ingredient lists you will learn how to make various alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and cordials.
For parties and social gatherings there is a wonderful group of punches which include a spiced warm apple punch and an eggnog which is so rich and frothy you will think you've died and gone to calorie heaven.
For those who choose not to drink there are also plenty of non-alcoholic recipes. These are not just fruit punches or herb teas. These are unique concoctions which please the eye as well as the palate. There are homemade versions of non-alcoholic beers and wines (something I've seen nowhere else)
A favorite chapter is the section on Juicing. She has created drinks which take into consideration visual appeal, taste, nutrition, and folklore.
Many of the recipes inside are also kid-friendly - apple-grape guru combines apple and grape juice with yogurt to create a smooth and creamy delight which is nutritious low fat and will have your kids asking for more. This is a purple cow taken to a new level. The homemade sodas will satisfy your child's craving for something sweet and bubbly while allowing you to control how much sugar you will allow. There is a sugared ginger beverage designed to settle queasy tummies big or small.
Closing the book are a short collection of special coffees and teas and beverages for your health.
The main aspect of this book which separates it from other cookbooks of its type is the fact Ms. Telesco uses magic. Many of her recipes include what magical attribute they have. Ex. Her "Fire Festival" drink is a hot and spicy tomato juice beverage which has the magical attributes of : bringing about change in ones life, finding the ability to rise from the ashes of a disaster, and purification. But even if magic is not something you use in your life... the recipes herein are unique, tasty and easy to follow. Patricia Telsco has created a book which translates equally well as a standard cookbook and a magical text.
