| althaea's Full Review: Pagan Kids' Activity Book |
I am so glad that this book was added to the database. First off, I have to state that I will not choose my childrens' religion for them. That is a personal choice. However, I do feel that, as a parent, it is my responsibility to make options available. My husband and I have friends of all religions; pagan,druid,jewish,christian,buddhist,hindu...
Through me, my child does not need to be ignorant and biased. Instead, we can strive for education and understanding. This will instill self confidence and a sense of knowing what they want. This book is a great introduction for adults and children alike. However, tha language definitely speaks to children. It is not complicated and intricate, but simple and to the point.
This book, Pagan Kids' Activity Book by Amber K is the first I have seen that presents any quality. I have seen other pagan coloring books. They were either of adult content or they were, well, cheesy. They consisted of a few pictures and no explanations. This book has the standard thick cardboard cove with the pictures and activities presented on thick paper.
Amber K really does justice to educating children about Diety. She talks about the Goddess, telling us that the Goddess is in all people. She has a page of symbols for the Goddess explaining "In ritual we use Symbols to represent the important things. The LABRYS and MIRROR OF VENUS are symbols of the Goddess. The Earth, Moon, Sea and Flower are more than symbols-they are really a part of teh Goddess, and She is in all of them."
She goes on to do the same thing for the God explaining that he is in all people and showing us symbols for the God. One of those which is the Stag.
Not only does she have pages that cover helping out in ritual, and parts of ritual, but she also includes some pages on herbs. She lists herbs like Comfrey and Peppermint and tells there uses. There are also pictures of some of the herbs to color.
She has two pages of "Some Goddesses You Might Like to Meet, and Some Gods You Might Like to Meet." These pages list some Gods and Goddesses, their characteristics, and their pantheons (where they come from).
ATHENA (Greek)Defender of the home, the family, and the community; known for her wisdom and bravery. Her symbols are the owl and the olive tree.
COYOTE (Native American) He created the Earth and is a great healer but also a clever Trickster. He lives in the mountains and deserts of the Southwest.
Also included is the Wheel of the Year and the Celebrations/Sabbats that are on that wheel; Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, Mabon, and Samhain. Each one is accompanied by an activity like a maze, word find, or a coloring activity.
I have to say that his is the First pagan kids book to really explain the things that pagans live by. The seasons, seeing the God and Goddess in nature and others, dreams, elements, and of course..
