SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Aug 24 '00
While school is in session a monthly colored circular goes out to each student in their classrooms. It is called Scholastic Book Club News. There are 3.5 pages of books to pick from. The last page has two software options available for both Mac and Windows users. For the month of June the choices were Disney’s Artist Studio for $19.95 and Franklin’s Activity Center for $14.95.
The second half of the last page is devoted to a separate book club. I have signed one son up for Franklin’s monthly club and the other son gets The Magic School Bus. The introductory pack is usually $1.95 - $2.95, arriving with the school orders. After the first shipment the monthly clubs are sent to the home and billed separately from the orders placed on the circular. You will receive an account number and deal directly with Scholastic on these clubs. You can cancel at any time, there is no requirement to purchase a certain quantity.
Each month the selections are from 47-62 to choose from. The lowest priced books start at 95 cents! I prefer to get two circulars, one for each child. There is usually a week to peruse the issue. Circle the number pertaining to the book, enter the number of books you would like and enter the amount. At the bottom total the number of the books, enter total amount with the child’s name. It is advised to pay up front to the teacher for the order.
Teachers have the option of faxing in their orders, calling and placing on a credit card or mailing in the order. During the months school is off in the summer, whether year round or not, I have not been able to order or see a circular for July or August in two years.
The teacher will have an identification number, not available to the families ordering through the teacher. One time the teacher forgot to place the order and went on vacation. I did not have the information but gave the school data and from that they were able to tell me she did not place the order. I had to wait for her return to place another order.
There is a magazine, which the teacher has placed in the backpacks. It is entitled, Scholastic Parent & Child. It states under the heading, The Learning Link Between Home & School . This comes out bimonthly with a list price of $2.95. As far as I know the teacher does not purchase this, they are sent with the order.
The magazine has a web site located at www.parentandchildonline.com. Scholastic Book Services are located in New Jersey with a toll free number of 1-800-289-3694. To get more information on the selections of what could be Your Child’s First Book Club, see their web site at www.scholastic.com/firefly.
I brought an extra issue of the magazine once to the Hospital to read while my children were having their speech therapy. Since I had another one at home, I offered the magazine to the speech therapist. She had never heard of Scholastic Book Club, and said her children went to Catholic Schools. Therefore, I am not sure if this is available for private schools, and suggest checking the website and asking a teacher if they know of this club.
The following is a list of what has been available in the past year:
A book of animal sounds $ .95
Pooh and the Dragon $1.95
Mr. Nosh $1.95
Cassette $2.95
I Love you, Little One $2.95
Cassette $2.95
Rainbow Fish Finger Puppet $7.95
Tacky the Penguin $ .95
The Night Before Christmas $9.95
My first book of the body $2.95
Glad Monster, Sad Monster $6.95 - big hit in my house
There are hardcover interactive books, multi-packs, plush animals, videos, cd-roms, soft cover books, board books. Some are available in Spanish as well.
For the cassettes, one side is the reading while the flip side is a read-along with the turn the page signals.
You will find animal books, award winning books, famous authors, disney characters, as well as books for each season. Prior to each holiday you will have the option of purchasing books, Halloween, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukah to name a few.
I spend anywhere from $5.00 - $25.00 for our book collection. When my 5 year old graduated the two year preschool special education program, the teacher gave him a Scholastic Book with an inscription to continue reading. Start a child off on the right journey with a book from the Scholastic Book Club. If you are a grandparent, ask the parents about this, and offer to purchase some books for the kids.
My son thoroughly enjoyed opening his backpack up when he returned home from school and removing his books I purchased through the book club. Since I get two circulars, I have him look through one and circle what he would like to get and we discuss which ones to get for his brother.
