“The Firm” is about the life of Mitch McDeere a resent graduate of Harvard Law School. Many firms are seeking him because he has graduated in the top five of his class. The firm of Bendini, Lambert, and Locke, offer him more then any other firm that he is looking at. A bigger salary, a new car, and a house that they will loan money for with a low interest rate. This firm is throwing every thing at him. Even better yet, the firm will pay off his college loans. It is a win-win situation for Mitch because he wants to move to a place that is warm and the other firms are in either New York or Chicago. He decides to accept the offer (who wouldn’t) and move him and his wife down to Memphis, Tenn.
As soon as Mitch passes the bar, which he does on his first time, the FBI starts to ask him questions. They tell him that his house has been bugged, along with his car and office. That the firm is hiding a big secret and that soon the FBI will tell him what it is. They tell him that they were working with two other lawyers in the firm who are now died. They tell him that this is not a coincidence. He then learns that there are a few other deaths in the firm that look a little suspicious. Finally the FBI tell him why they are looking into the firm. Bendini, Lambert, and Locke is a cover for the Mafia. Although they do have some legitimate work, they also do a lot of dirty work for the Mafia. Mitch has to decide what he is going to do. Will he help the FBI and risk getting killed, or stay at the firm and worry about the FBI finding another new layer that could get him arrested.
If you've seen the movie version of "The Firm," please don't let that prejudice you against the book. The book and the movie are very different. I don’t think there is any way that Mitch could trick both the Mob and the FBI into thinking that he is working for them, and then screw them both. That is Hollywood and everything is unbelievable in that world. The book is much better. The characters in the book are much better written. Especially the wife. In the movie she doesn’t seem to mind as much that her husband is working 20 hours a day only coming home to eat then go right back. She doesn’t mind that much that he slept with another women. In the book she acts mad. She doesn’t understand why he is working that much and she wants her husband home.
This Grisham book is one of the better that he has written. I really like his work and this book is one of my favorites. If you want to read a good book that you can’t put down, this is it.
