Going on a road trip? Commuting every day? Get books on tape!Aug 23 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I recently went on a very long road trip with the family. We were off to Minnesota from Colorado, which is at least twenty hours long in the best of circumstances. Because we were bringing our kids along, ages seven and four, we had to think up something to entertain them in the car! And quite frankly, I'm not a fan of road trips myself. I needed something to entertain me too! Suddenly it dawned on me ... what about those books on tape? I'd never listened to one, but with about forty hours in the car coming up, I'd have plenty of time to try some out. I didn't want to shell out a bunch of money on something I might not even enjoy, so I made a trip to our local library instead. Much to my amazement, they had a huge selection of books on tape! I was a little disappointed that there was no kids' section for these, but I did manage to find a few that seemed good for kids. I got two old-time radio program tapes, The Jungle Book for the kids, and Robinson Crusoe. I was hoping the kids would like all of those selections, but Robinson Crusoe didn't get their interest much. Luckily, The Jungle Book and the radio shows were a big hit. The only thing I didn't like about books on tape is the fact that, at least on the ones I borrowed, they're narrated all the way through by just one person. So if you don't like the sound of their voice, it's really distracting. And even if you do like their voice, it's still a little monotonous listening to, in the case of Robinson Crusoe, thirteen hours of the same voice! I work at home, so I'm not in my car much. However, if I was doing the daily commute thing, I'd sure be borrowing these often from the library. What a great way to "read" lots of books while you're commuting! One thing that worries me about this whole concept, however. If you're listening to them in your car, and therefore keeping the whole set in your car, what about the hot sun beating into your car when you're parked? I would think that would melt them, and I was really nervous about ruining the libraries tapes. Has anyone experienced that? I am really glad I thought of borrowing the books on tape, and look forward to listening to many more. I bet you'll enjoy them too! |
