When I had to choose a book by a foreign author for my English book report I shrugged. When the librarian recommended an Oprah book, again I shrugged. But when I read the first few chapters of the book I became hooked. Following the main character from pre-birth to late life, I became attached to Trudi Montag. She's a dwarf in Nazi Germany who always wanted to be bigger. I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but I can tell you that reading about WWII from a German perspective was quite interesting, and that alone is worth reading this book.
The book is a larger one at over 500 pages, but it was a surprising fast read. Ms. Hegi had an excellent style of writing, and I plan on reading the prequel and the sequel to this book in the future. The main character, Trudi, is based on a real German dwarf in Ms. Hegi's life.
As I said before, I'm not an Oprah Book Club fan. Oprah's books seem to always be depressing, and this book was no exception. The one difference, I liked this book. I hope that you do to.
