Speaking of St. Thomas... (Reply to this comment)

I had the honor of "first review" on the excellent anthology ST. THOMAS AQUINAS ON POLITICS AND ETHICS. It's one of the best of the Norton Critical Edition series, and that's saying something.

Excellent piece on Chesterton. He's always met with incomprehension by the Blachfords of the world.

It wasn't Pooh - it was Wol! He wrote it at Piglet's request for Eeyore's birthday. And it was been the birthday greeting in my family for more than 50 years...

I do not believe that I have ever been affected by a writer such as you describe. Your review was eloquent; I hope he lived up to it.

ASTOUNDING... (Reply to this comment)
by 29th_Candidate
To give you some indication of how highly I regarded this sparkling masterpiece of underscore (W.O.T nothing; you achieved that paltry honor about three sentences into your essay's tractor beam of mesmerizing eloquence...,) I actually entertained the fantasy of bungie-jumping from a helicopter hovering above the jagged panorama of the Grand Canyon, but substituting freshly heated chewing gum for the traditionally used elastic cords. This, I mused, I would undertake with the serene indifference of a Shaolin priest; secure in the knowledge that my epittance income had secured your solemn promise to write me an elegy on my passing into the next realm.

All imagined hyperbole aside, I have no reservations in my advising you that I consider this the best piece of literature I have yet encountered on this site...

Not Too Shabby,

Jim (29th_Captivate)

Oh yes... happy birthday...

I wish there was a rating category,'Really,Truly,Highly Recommended'. I would have rated this under THAT category. I guess 'HR' shall have to suffice. By the way, you are a shameless name-dropper. I like that.

Brilliant, as usual (Reply to this comment)

Once again I am inspired and at the same time, dashed by the utter paucity of my literary education. (Why oh why did I ever go to that technical school!?).

I shall never forget your birthday, since you share it with my oldest brother. I hope you have/had a wonderful day, and many happy, healthy returns!

best,
Joan

Fascinating as always (Reply to this comment)

I'm always impressed by your ability to analyze. I confess that bigotry of any kind would completely counteract any positive qualities for me, so I was interested in seeing how you would accommodate it here. You did - so well, in fact, that you almost convinced me! But MY prejudices won out again - I admire the man's writing, but not him, and they are indistinguishable to me.

I wanted to participate, never having done so before, but got home too late to gather my thoughts and record them coherently, and then I realized that I don't know how to participate technically, so I'm enjoying it vicariously this time around. I'll have to educate myself before the next write-off.

Happy birthday, young man, and may you never catch up with me - age-wise, that is!

to note which authors mentioned grace the shelves. Ain't gonna tell ya. Whoa! That's an impressive list, Markham and a wonderful review of a favorite.

Happy, Happy Birthday to a most revered writer on Epinions and many thanks for organizing this write-off. I'm learning a lot as I always do from you, too.
