I’ve read my share of Self-help books and I’ve gotten plenty of funny looks and comments about it. “What’s wrong that you are trying to fix?” Maybe I’m strange or unusual but I don’t read these books to fix anything. I consider myself very well adjusted, happy goal oriented individual. I don’t have any “issues” I’m not a man who loves bad women or any of that. I read these books because there is something I want to make better.

For example, my friends and family have always complained about my bad memory. I never seemed to be able to remember the things I wanted to, don’t get me wrong my memory wasn’t bad. Only certain things would stick in my head, so I went out and read a few books on improving your memory. The best one which I wrote an epinion on was called Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory : How to Release Your Superpower Memory in 30 Minutes or Less a Day by Kevin Trudeau. Now my memory is very good, I consider it an asset in my job. I can remember things better than the people I work with and have more confidence in the things that I do recall.

All my life I’ve read a lot. As the son of a librarian all of us kids were expected and encouraged to read often, though wisely we were allowed to choose what we wanted to read about. Consequently I learned how to read quickly, it wasn’t quite speed reading but it was close. I decided that if I could naturally read fast how much faster could I get? I followed my usual method of self-improvement, get every book on the subject and try out everything. Eventually I came upon a quality book which I of course wrote an Epinion on, Triple Your Reading Speed : The Acceleread Method by Cutler, Wade E. I doubled my reading speed, there was nothing magical about it. All it took was trying something new and the willingness to stick with it and practice.

I could go on and on about the different areas of my life I’ve tried to make better; people skills, intelligence, creativity and emotions. All these things I’ve worked on with varying degrees of success. But what I think the theme here is, areas of control. Every thing that I worked on improving is an area that the majority of people consider to be out of their own personal control.

If I read slowly or have a bad memory then oh well, that’s the way I was made. There’s nothing to be done about it, certainly no way to improve. I think people are often too quick to ascribe their own personal characteristics more permanence then they deserve. You were born and from that moment you began to change…and you haven’t stopped since. You can decide that you want to reinforce what you already know or you can try something new and see how good it can get.
