| wampyrii's Full Review: Bachman Books: Four Early Novels |
The Bachman books is a collection of Stephen King's early works written when he was in college, later to be rediscovered when he found fame, dusted off and published under the name of Richard Bachman to avoid embarassment to the author.
Strangely enough though there is nothing here for King to have been embarassed about. Admittedly they are not the best examples of his work, but they are still very interesting short stories in their own right. For your money here you get 4 short stories which are not all based around the horror theme which you would expect, but nevertheless comment upon the darker side of humanity.
The best of them all must be 'Thinner'. A gypsy puts a curse upon a business man which means that no matter what he eats he just gets thinner and thinner. Eventually he comes across the gypsy again who tells him what he must do in order to be able to remove this curse from himself - but then there is a heavy moral price to pay for this...This is an excellent story and is also not as long-winded as many of King's recent offerings like the dreary Dolores Clairborne for example. This has also relatively recently been converted into a low budget movie as well which is worth a watch if it comes your way - but don't bother to seek it out because it really isn't that good.
The other tales in here are OK but nothing to shout about...but then equally nothing to hide your name from. All have been converted to television as far as I know so you'll probably recognize them now as well which may be slightly off putting. Nevertheless this is a good selection of short stories which is worth checking out but isn't going to have you raving about them.
