I always wanted to try out the Darkover series and of course I wanted to begin at the beginning. So I started hunting for this novel. Well, my bookstore said it was out of print,(of course) and my library did not carry it. I thought all was lost, until I found it in a used book store for .50. I couldn't believe my luck. So I bought the novel and read it.
It is a very good beginning to a series or a stand alone novel. A ship from a very advanced human race (us years from now) is traveling to a colony planet somewhere in a galaxy far, far away. Except they have a problem and crash land on a planet no one has discovered before. It will support human life, but they have lost part of their manpower and are not sure if they can repair the ship.
They planet does not have the metals(iron) our planet has and its plant life has a funny effect on humans, at certain times pollen or something is released into the air that makes humans loose control, they become uninhibited emotionally and sexually. And also the planet has caused some people to develop ESP. It is a very good novel, although rather short, but series books should not take forever to read. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and soon as I can get a hold of them.
