YoKelli's Full Review: Michael Shaara - The Killer Angels: A Novel of the...
Michael Shaara's account of the four days surrounding the Battle of Gettysburg is amazing. He makes the battle and the people come alive. He vividly describes the feeling, the sensations, and the emotions of such a great battle in American History. It's like being there along with the Union and Confederate soldiers; the long walks toward battle, the bullets flying overhead, the strategies of war, the long nights in camp, and the feeling of wanting the war to end. Not only does Shaara describe the historical events of the battle, but he also conveys the meaning of the battle. He describes what this battle meant to both Union and Confederate soldiers. Unlike many historical novels, The Killer Angels can keep the reader's attention and give them the feeling of what life was like during the Civil War. In addition, this book gives the reader a better understanding of the historical events and the participants in this battle. I could not put this book down. Even though the outcome of the battle is already known, Shaara's account of the events makes the book 'a must read'. The Killer Angels is the basis of the movie "Gettysburg," starring Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger, and Jeff Daniels. The Civil War story is continued by Jeff Shaara, Michael's son, in the books "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure."
