I have to say that this has to be on of the best books ever written.
It is about the Battle at Gettysburg.
It tells you about all the battles of this 4 day run in this Pennsylvania town. It covers both the North and South, both sides, both stories. It starts with the first day battles, and ends with Pickett's charge.
Their are 2 characters in this book that I really felt for, Armistead who is fighting for the South and Hanncock who is fighting for the North. These 2 men were like brothers before the war, and here they meet. All the characters are real.
The book was so well researched, well written, just everything about it was fantastic. When you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down.
The movie Gettysburg is based on this book and it is a fantastic movie. Martin Sheen is terrific as Robert E. Lee. The entire cast was great.
I have been to Gettysburg several times, however, when I went after reading this book, I saw it in an entirely different way.
There are 2 other books that go with this one. Jeff Shaara wrote them both after his father's death. They are Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure. I would recommend reading all three.
