Great Black/White Photography Resource

Written: Jan 05 '01
Pros:Great for classes or independent study.
Cons:Might be too basic for some photographers.

I take a black and white photo course and after reading Black and White Photography, my photography skills have gotten far better. It is a basic manual for all ages and explains the art of Black and White Photo. In this review, I will:
a. explain the book's format
b. explain whats included in the book
c. list who would benefit from it
d. list other helpful books on the subject.
(A) This book's format is made up of 11 chapters and 4 appendixes. The chapters are--An Overview, the Camera Body, the Camera Lens, the Shutter, Film Exposure, Film Developing, the Negative, Making the Print, Final Touches, Camera Accessories, and Alternative Techniques. The Appendixes are--Buying/Maintaining Equipment, Bulk Loading Film, Negative/Print problems, and Film, Paper, and Chemical Brands. There is also a glossary, bibliography, and index.
(B) In the book, you will find many pictures and diagrams explaining the text. The glossary in back defines the vocabulary that is being used. The diagrams have captions which makes the book very straighforward.
(C) This book would most benefit:
1. Beginners--intermediates
2. Teachers (lesson ideas)
3. Students
(D) Other books you may be interested in checking out (all which can be found on epinions.com and all which I have written on):
1. John Hedgecoe's Complete Guide to Photography
2. Photography for Dummies
3. Basic 35mm photo
