| ldial2's Full Review: Fielding, Joy |
Joy Fielding has taken every woman's worst nightmares and written terrifying and engrossing novels about them. In each of Fielding's books she takes all that a woman would hold dear (husband, children, best friend, and her own physical and emotional safety) and either puts them in danger or makes the heroine doubt their loyalty. What is most frightening about these books is that the plots could happen to anyone. You don't have to be cop, PI, heiress, etc., but just a wife or mother.
Because these novels hit so close to home and the female readers can identify so well with the main character, the books are doubly terrifying and engrossing. One novel, Don't Cry Now, about a woman who eventually realizes that she is being poisoned by someone close to her kept me reading feverishly to find out who was doing it. As I read my anxiety mounted and with every page everyone dear to her began to look suspicious in some way. I couldn't put the book down!
The beauty of these books also lies in the strength portrayed by our heroine. These women are always brave and will do anything to protect themselves and their families. In the end the strength of our heroine always wins even if her live is forever altered.
The only downside to Fielding's novels is that sometimes they can hit a bit too close to home. The reality of the horror in some of her books may be too much for some readers. Not that the writing is overly brutal, but the ideas are just terrifying. But if you are looking for a moving and scary book, I highly recommend any novel by Fielding.
