hamburgerman's Full Review: Taro Gomi - Everyone Poops
A friend told me about this book several months ago. We’ve joked about it ever since then, so when I was thinking what I should get her for Christmas, I thought this might be the perfect gift. I just picked one up at the bookstore this evening for $11.95.
“Everyone Poops” is a wonderful, colorful little book with 26 pages of animals and people pooping. The book doesn’t waste any time letting you know what it is about. The cover page has a picture of a racoon surrounded by 8 pictures of turds of various shapes and sizes. The first page let’s the reader know that “Elephants make big poops, mice make tiny poops.”
Joining the elephant and the mouse in a good poop include several fish, a bird, a bug, a deer, a snake, a rabbit, an alligator, an armadillo, a giraffe, a gorilla, a duck and a hippo. We learn that some animals stop to poop, and some poop on the go. But people do it in a special place, the bathroom. Some children do it in the potty, some do it in their diapers. The illustrations show the different shapes and sizes of the various animal poop.
My personal favorite entry is the whale where the writer asks “What does whale poop look like?” Also worth mentioning are the camels, “A one-hump camel has a one-hump poop, a two-hump camel has a two-hump poop. Just kidding!”
I do not know the original intent of “Everybody Poops.” Perhaps it attempts to explain to children that pooping is nothing to be embarrassed about, it is a fact of life and just about every living creature does it. Maybe it was written just for fun, realizing children of all ages find poop funny. I still find poop funny – I love this book!
According to the inside cover, “Everybody Poops” was originally published in Japan under the title “Minna Unchi.” Copyright 1977 by Taro Gomi. The American version is translated by Amanda Mayer Stinchecum (Stinch - Coincidence?) and copyright 1993 Kane/Miller Book Publishers.
