momtonine's Full Review: Cheryl Mendelson - Home Comforts: The Art And Scie...
Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson in not what you'd expect. To begin with the author is not the housekeeping tips and tricks expert that I thought she was, by profession she is an attorney. By passion she is a homemaker. If you read this book for no other reason pick it up and the read the first chapter entitled My Secret Life. It will speak to all of us who, like myself, were raised in a time where young women were taught that the only valuable skills were the ones that led to a professional career, and the domestic skills were ignored or devalued.
Having kept house for 18 years I thought I knew it all. I was so wrong.
The book branches out to include not only practical and sensible instructions and advice on all aspects of homemaking but also gives background as to customs, habits, and the tools of homemaking through the years.
Did you know that people used to eat ice cream with forks? Did you know that the rule of sweep first, dust second was due to the prevalence of dirt floors during the nineteenth century? These are just a couple of examples of the trivia connected with the home that you'll find in this book.
Ms. Mendelson also gives much practical instructions, often accompanied by step by step illustrations, that would be valuable to any homemaker. From how to fold a fitted sheet, to the correct way to set a table for any occasion.
Not only would this book make a terrific gift for someone setting up their first home, it would also make a valuable addition to the libraries of the more experienced homemaker. And beyond all of that, its just a fun read!
