I Was Floored! (Reply to this comment)
by JMB623
I had known about Lila since before I met her when you brought her to the City for lunch way back in 2002. Without the fore-knowledge I would not have noticed her autism. Since then my wife's youngest sister has had two autistic sons. My own daughter, now 9, is such a Marin kid, sometimes very aggravating, but in most things very ordinary (normal?). Ordinariness can be quite sought after and OK in the face of autism's devastation.

I had read some Bettelheim as a "Psych" major back in Madison in the late '60's, but it had little impact on my edge-dweller's existence during those weird times.

Although this review is not about Bettelheim's book, I think it is most helpful in the encouragement it gives to less able parents to look elsewhere, and to keep on truckin'! On top of that it is very moving, and gives us all a good example of why you are being published.

Best wishes on your first book, A Field of Darkness (www.corneliaread.com). The first drafts of it were great, so I expect that after all the professional polishing before publication it will be huge hit on the NY Times bestseller list for 198 weeks.

i know Cornelia, but I didn't know her when she wrote this piece and I JUST now read it. I know about her kids, I know some of this story but reading this? It's stunning. I knew the story of Bettelheim but only learned it a few years ago and cannot imagine what it felt like to be accused of such evil when you KNEW you were not evil. I can imagine a bit because I've lived with a disability for years and remember when more than one doctor told me "you're imagining it" and hinted that I needed therapy because I was making it up. I later met SO many women who were told the same thing - because the causes of the problems didn't always show on x-rays or other obvious tests.
I've said before that some of C's work should be published in textbooks of "how to write". (especially that Madonna Inn piece). This is one of those. It's f-ing brilliant.

refridgerator mothers????? (Reply to this comment)
by madmandy
I was appalled to find that this psycho was allowed anywhere near anyone with autism. Every child I know with autism, including my own daughter has loving parent(s) who would do anything for their child. I can't believe that the opinions of low life child abusers like him were once taken seriously and I'm only glad that she wasn't around in his time to suffer in his hands. Thank you for making me aware of this monster and I will most definitely be avoiding anything else which contains his opinions. Hope you find his grave and spit on it, people like him make me so angry.

Explanation/apology/clarification/exacerbation (Reply to this comment)

I was steered to this review by a link from a friend (Kosberg) and I misread it to be a review of the BOOK rather than a comment on the author. When you said "This isa review of a book I've not read," it only added to my confusion/error.

Since it ain't about da book, I can HR this sucker no prob. ;-)

I can't rate this (Reply to this comment)
by AggieBrett
At the risk of offending Elaine and others, I cannot fairly rate this piece. Yes, it's wonderfully written and worth a read, but mainly as an editorial against Bettelheim's philosophies. As a book review, it's not especially useful.

In terms of quality of writing, it's clearly deserving on an HR, but as a review of the specific Bettelheim book under discussion, it's not especially useful.

Somebody email me to explain what I'm misunderstanding. I *want* to rate this piece, but for the life of me I can't decide what's fair and right.

And furthermore: (Reply to this comment)

This was written so well that I feel a certain loathing for those who gave you anything less than an "HR". In this regard I'm sorry, not for you, but for them.

Until this moment I have not felt inclined to add any one to my WOD. But the "SR" and "NR" list, on this review, will certainly give me a jump-start, as to whom to observe (or not, as the case might be).

I'll tell you what to do with that book (Reply to this comment)
by ElaineP8
Read it. One page at a time. Next to your toilet. Use it instead of TP and save money. Smear it with the essence expressed in its evil, ugly, twisted words. It is filled with lies from the pit. Flush it there.

God bless you,

great insight into an unknown problem (Reply to this comment)
by ifif1938
I feel as if I've been educated in an area unknown of by me before reading this article. As a mother & now a new grandmother I can share the heartbreak the author must have felt during those years of not knowing the problems afflicting her child...My heart goes out to her & I wouldn't go near that book with a ten foot pole....

Your epinion on Bettelheim just cut me off at the knees. When I first read you were reviewing a book you hadn't read, I was tempted to click off right away. But thank God, something, probably your compelling style of writing, made me stay.

Now I understand why you have the book, but will not read it. I was not aware of Bettelheim's history as you recounted it here. What a horrible man!

As research progresses, I feel certain that the causes of autism will be indentified and effective therapies implemented. I have read of isolated cases where parents were successful in "bringing back" an autistic child, but unfortunately, their results cannot always be replicated.

I will keep you and your children in my prayers. God bless you for writing such a heart-wrenching epinion, and for opening my eyes about an subject that was unfamiliar to me.

Eloquence Comes From The Heart and Soul (Reply to this comment)
by ramsfan
Suffering from a chronic and progressive disease that made Sylvia Plath put her her in an oven, (Bell Jar), and having tutored my special brother, Donnie, who happens to have Down Syndrome, in addition to his many other attributes, I was stunned speechless by the most moving epinion I have yet to read. Cornelia, your have already become my e-friend, I am sure I am only one of many who has moved to request that all your offerings be announced.
As a health care professional, with the past twelve years in the trenches of mental health, I have lived the horrors of alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and the multitude of other biochemical imbalances people suffer. We have patients and 'identified patients', those who experience the mental, emotional and physical pain the normal(yeah) world sadly inflicts.
I chose to think of this man as evil and ignorant. Isn't it scary when such a monster has power? Luckily, the science of neurotransmitters, and the abiding faith of motherhood will help to dispell such taint.

Your heart (Reply to this comment)
by counsel
It seems that your heart and soul have - also, perhaps, involuntarily - grown because of the horrible affliction which has invaded your family. I was transported into your life for a few brief moments while reading this essay. I hope you find a way to share this information with more readers; it's not just the families that deal with autism that need to read it.

Cornelia, Cornelia. You are such a wonderful writer and such an eloquent mother, it brings tears to my eyes. Your obvious education in the field lends substance and gravitas to your explosively good writing in this essay. Keep going! the subject needs you to write about it, no matter how many other good books may be out there.

Could you please professionally publish that piece? You are so talented! And a WONDERFUL mother. Though I do not really "know" you. I was very moved by your writing and will never set myself near this book.

Excellent, excellent, piece of writing. I am in awe.
