Lumley's "Defilers"

Written: Jul 13 '00
Pros:Vivid characters, well-paced, cliff-hanger
Cons:A bit less graphic than other Necroscope works

The latest trilogy of the latest Necroscope installment that began with "Invaders" continues with "Defilers" in the same taut, tense atmosphere created by Lumley's insidious, monstrous Wamphryi. Mr. Lumley continues to create characters that find new ways to fill the reader with loathing, and heros that are lacking in so many ways, yet always seem to find a way to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.

Defilers begins slowly, crawling through the necessary deed of "catching the readers up" on events, enabling this book to stand alone, somewhat, though references to events in the previous book are sparse and scattered. However, Mr. Lumley's characterizations are strong enough to overcome this tedious pace, and he shows his mastery over pace as he builds the plot's crescendo without the reader even becoming aware of it.

There is no other Voice in all this industry like the Voice of the Wamphryi. All the passions that we repress come blazing through in blistering detail time and again. Is there nothing these fiends are not capable of? Defilers does not disappoint here, but shows the adaptability of the Wamphryi and their overwhelming desire to survive. And what of the new "Necroscope"? Is this a re-incarnation of the staunch, rock-ribbed, decidedly "British" Harry Keogh? Readers of this latest installment know better, and for those of you who do not--read the first of this new trilogy, "Invaders".

I cannot wait for "Avengers" to come out. Should be wonderful.
