| JasonMilne's Full Review: Michael Shaara - The Killer Angels: A Novel of the... |
Michael Shaara's THE KILLER ANGELS is one of the finest pieces of historic fiction I have ever read. The book is narrated by living the battle through the minds of the Union and Confederate generals. Each of the three days, from the battle on Cemetary Ridge, to the second day on the Little Round Top, to the finale of Pickett's Charge is lived through, Robert E. Lee, General Longstreet, George Pickett, Thomas Chamberlain, General Hancock and more.
My wife and I visited Gettysburg, PA this past spring and that is where I picked up the book. After touring the battlefield, I read the book and it made for a very compelling, interesting, and educational experience. It almost makes you want to become a Civil War buff!
Michael Shaara died and his son the two books that accompany THE KILLER ANGELS. GOD'S AND GENERALS, the first book of the trilogy takes the reader from the beginning of the Civil War to the Battle of Gettysburg. The third book, THE LAST FULL MEASURE, picks up after Gettysburg and goes throught the remainder of the Civil War. I have only read THE KILLER ANGELS, but plan on getting to the other two when I get some more time.
If you like history, the Civil War, or both, then Michael Shaara's THE KILLER ANGELS is a must read!
