After working with children who read below grade level, I can tell you it is SO important to read to and with your children. The sooner you introduce books, the sooner they will be interested. Here are some great things to do when reading to and with your children. Do a picture walk, look at everything that is happening in the pictures. This is a good time to introduce a lot of vocabulary.

If your children are old enough ask , " What do you think will happen next? " or " Why do you think that happened? " You would be surprised at the answers. Help them build an understanding. From day one, show the kids one to one correspondence. Show them that you start at the left and read right. PUT YOUR FINGER UNDER THE WORDS let them know that all those letters have a meaning. Soon they will realize when you are out of words, you go to the next page before you TALK again. Let your child READ to you, when they are little, they will either make up their own story or tell it from memory. THIS IS GOOD. Real reading will come later.

NEVER discourage only encourage. If it's wrong don't correct them, HELP them. Positive reading will only make for a student who can do their grade level work, remember if they are in 5th reading at 3rd how do you expect them to accomplish the classwork that is written in 5th grade text ? Praise your children, and if they can read the words, ask them questions for comprehension or ask them to retell in their own words. A little work goes a long way towards being a successful reader :o) I know been there done that. Now helping others to do it too.
