Galactic Conquest!
As the rebels celebrate their victory over Emperor Palpatine and the second Death Star, the rebel alliance intercepts a distress call from an outpost imperial world: Invasion!
And thus begins the next exciting chapter of the Star Wars universe.
Kathy Tyers writes a very good story set in the Star Wars universe. While not having the same power or complexity as a Timothy Zahn novel, nor the intriguing politics and humor of a Michael Stackpole or Aaron Allston X-Wing novel, she writes a good story with a solid emotional key:
Leia must do what Luke has already done: confront Vader.
How does a princess whose entire planet and family was destroyed by the most villainous and evil adversary come to grips with the fact that the same person was her father and, according to her brother, a good man? Kathy entrances us with this question and provides actual character growth for a main Star Wars character; not something that happens very often in the novels. Unfortunately, this is not the main focus of the novel, the Ssi-Ruuk invasion is.
The Ssi-Ruuk are formidable opponents from another galaxy for the rebels and imperials alike, and thus the rebels and imperials must form an alliance or be destroyed. Princess Leia attempts to use this opportunity to gain a diplomatic victory for the new Alliance. And Luke finds his first romantic interest, Gaeriel. Unfortunately, this plot and the characterization of Luke fall rather flat.
The main alien invasion plot and energy-transference-to-power-evil-robots may seem a bit more like Star Trek than Star Wars, but is an interesting idea never before touched on in the Star Wars novels.
The Truce at Bakura was first printed in January of 1994, the fourth new book in the Star Wars series, however, chronologically precedes the first three books known as the Zahn trilogy.
The Truce at Bakura is a fun, interesting read and worth the time for most serious Star Wars fans. The casual fan, however, may want to skip directly ahead to the Zahn Trilogy.
Kathy Tyers has also written several short stories in the Star Wars universe, including the band's tale in Tales From Mos Eisley, "We Don't Do Weddings."
