This lesson will review the infamous deltree virus. ..::)[ Deltree Virus Case Study ](::.. About 2 years ago America Online was stricken with the infamous deltree virus. Hundreds upon hundreds of users downloaded and ran the virus which was disguised as a JPEG file. (Image file) it was named "mypic.jpeg.exe". On December 30th the virus self executed. The only error that saved people was bad timing routine and a missing file for interfacing with DOS though windows. However ,it would still change your profile to make you Marked. So I spent December 31st, helping everyone get rid of the virus and fix their profiles. So what was it all about? And how easy was it to get this virus? Lets take a look. (For those of you who know nothing about DOS,Look for my "DOS- The 8 Bit Wonder" review and learn more.) there are a few ways to impliment it. First there is the batch (.bat) method. rem this is an example of the deltree virus. @echo off @deltree \Y c:\ @echo on batch files are small txt files that when click on run like executes. They where made to make automation in DOS easier. Now someone would take this batch file and get a batch-to-com convert and turn it into a .com file (old style DOS executes) then they can simply take and change the file name to "mypic.jpeg.com" and they have now created a successful virus. Since this is a non-advanced section I won't go into the C++ method. How do I Protect Myself ? • Watch what you Download. Look at the full file name. • Before you open anything, right click on it and check properties. Just because it has the Icon of a JPEG or Other Image file doesn't mean it is • If your unsure of the user you receive it from. DON'T DOWNLOAD IT. • If something starts to happen that you don't want to, you have about 5 seconds to hit the power button. When you hit the power button everything is halted and stopped. Things that were deleted that were not deleted permanently will be returnable. Halting the program will also allow you to save some of your data. • If you have a question, Ask someone. • In doubt, delete it. |
