Auggie63's Full Review: Michael Shaara - The Killer Angels: A Novel of the...
Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the Battle of Gettysburg makes any avid civilwar junky cringle with enthusiasm. I read the book my freshman year at college and immediately fell in love with it. Shaara brings you a realistic Civil War battle which reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any other piece of nonfiction on the same subject. Michael Shaara's novel emphasizes the three most important days of the Civil War and features indepth characterizations of all of the main actors, including General Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Buford, and Hancock. The most inspiring figure in the book, however, is Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose 20th Maine regiment of volunteers held the Union's left flank on the second day of the battle and possibly saved the battle for the North. This unit's bravery at Little Round Top helped turned the tide of the war against the rebels. The novel also includes maps which helps the reader understand the position of the armies on the days of July 1-3, 1863. One of the most complimantary aspects of the book is the author's ability to focus on one character in every chapter and thus giving a reader a complete account of the battle. I believe it is a book that can be enjoyed in any situation.
