Blood and Chocolate is a truly wild, hair-curling read!
By the highly-acclaimed author of the novel The Silver Kiss [also about an unlikely romance], this book is a refreshing look at life as a were-wolf. The main character, Vivian is a young loup-garou [were-wolf] living in a large city. She and her pack just moved there a year ago, because in the small town they came from one of there number [a wild, young wolf] killed a human and some people figured out what they were. They burned their inn, which ended in the death of several of their number--most notably Vivian's father, the pack leader. Vivian is a gorgeous creature in both her forms and is constantly courted by The Five [a pack of wild young wolves--friends of the killer, who was killed by the Pack for his crime], yet she wants no part of them. She is lonely and troubled about the state her pack is in--instead of the unity she remembers and longs for, they are always fighting and are without a leader. She meets and falls in love with a "meat-boy" a human and the trouble just begins from there.
The only slightly negative thing I have to say about this is the confusing way Klause writes Vivian. Sometimes she is wild and passionate [craving both sex and violence] and others she is sensitive and frightened of violence. I think Klause could have used this by depicting her two sides [human and wolf] as at odds with eachother, as she tries to fit in. But instead, she does not address it at all, and leaves the reader with a rather weak impression of Vivian.
But other than that, this is a well written novel I would reccommend to almost everyone. However, be warned, this is a strongly written book with much sexual lust and blood lust.
