Well they won't replace my paper books

Oct 09 '00

I will never tire of reading a book that I can hold, smell, feel. I will always have them cluttering up my house and laying here, there and everywhere.

I do think E-books have their place and their uses though. However, I also see it could have it's benefits and it's drawbacks. I will attempt to share my thoughts on each as I have followed the growth of E-books from the first moment I found out of their existence.

Pros and Cons: The way I see it there are several things that make me for E-books and a few that make it impossible for me to think of them replacing my paper books.

1. Most are given away for free as promos on websites. Not all of them have useful information but most do. I tend to stick to the E-books that are about web design, marketing online, etc.

2. The ever obvious fact that it will save trees because an E-book does not use paper. However, we do have to think of other resources it does use up which are just as important. Electricity is one I can think of. If everyone turned on their PC to read a book it would use more electricity then if we just opened a paper book.

3. This next thought is both a pro and con. I have long wanted to be a writer. Ever since I was a child and filled in my School Day's books with my mother. When I was asked what I would like to do when I grew up, I chose writer for all grades except one.

I see E-books as a great way for hopeful writer's to get published and even sell their work without the need for a publisher. I also see this as a great way to get a publisher.

Let me expand on that for a bit. Say I wrote a book and was selling or even giving it away. That book was downloaded like crazy and people were wild about it and talking about it. This could be very good for me and get me a publisher for my other ideas.

However, I think this could be a serious con in a way for publishers. Unless someone is really set on having their book as a paper creation, a publisher is not needed.

Another good point to consider is subsidy publishing. I have often read that subsidy publishing is the way to go if you want to be published but are not being accepted by publishers. I have always considered it to be a bit of a scam. I am sure there are honest subsidy publishers out there but I feel that more of them just scam you out of your work.

So as you can see, from a person who is still a "wannabe writer", there are several pro's and con's to this invention. I for one think it is great. I also enjoy reading E-books.

E-books have one thing over conventional books that really stands out. You can have sound, animation, and more in an E-book. My thought on this is that while it is new and cool now, that appeal may not last too long.

I have created my own E-books and have two or three programs that create E-books and more that I have tried but did not keep. Creating an E-book is just like making a website except that it comes in the form of a "book" that you can download to your hard drive to read.

Some E-book software is easy to use and some not. Some create fancier E-books that actually look like books and you can turn pages like a book and some don't. I would recommend trying before you buy.

However, if you want to break into writing and are having a hard time doing so, then writing an E-book may be just the thing to give your career the boost it needs. They also are pretty good traffic draws if you are giving one away for free that has information people want.

Each of us has information we can share. Some may choose to share it for free. Others may choose to charge for it. Now, if you have plans that helped you to build a better mousetrap you can share them with the world using E-books.
