All Souls is an absorbing book from start to finish. It is written by a young man who grew up in South Boston in the seventies and eighties. Michael MacDonald describes the neighborhood and its residents in such descriptive detail it is almost as if you too have lived in Southie.
Michael's story begins when he is a young child and continues until he is a young man in his twenties, trying to help his younger brothers grow up. He does a wonderful job evoking the strengths of the tightknit neighborhood as well as describing the overwhelming poverty and oppression which existed there as well. The story of his family and their tragedies will make you cry by the time you are done.
This is a must read for any Boston resident. It allows you to understand some of the racial and ethnic history of the city as well as appreciate that even the "worst" neighborhoods can be nurturing, giving places in which to live.
