Nowadays, every third person is on some kind of quest for enlightenment. In 1928, when Manly Hall published his Secret Teachings of All Ages, that was hardly the case. It seemed to him as if the whole world had gone mad in its embrace of materialism, both scientific and financial. So he dropped out of the stock market at the top of his career (and scarcely a year before the Crash of '29!) to see what else there was.
Fortunately for him, he made a few lucky contacts, and those contacts got him in to some of the most obscure archives and collections in Europe. They also got him help translating documents that had scarcely been looked at in hundreds of years. And those documents set him on fire. He set out to write a book about the origins and inner mysteries of human religion, spirituality, magic, and enlightenment. He ended up with a huge slab of a book, with every page beautifully illustrated. Parts of it are uneven. Parts of it have since been utterly debunked. But the sections on alchemy, on Rosicrucianism, and on speculative Freemasonry have still never been excelled.
When he first published it (at his own expense, mostly), he took it for granted that in his secular, money-mad times, it would only sell a couple of hundred copies. The first TWO printings sold out by subscription, with no real advertising by word-of-mouth, before the first copy even shipped. And through the study group he founded, the Philosophical Research Society, it is still in print and still selling steadily, 70+ years later. And it deserves it.
The scholarship is deep and broad (for its time), and the book itself is so beautiful that it belongs on coffee tables everywhere. I can't recommend it too highly.
