I love good fantasy fiction. I devour it like Godiva Chocolate. And I've found a lot of very good authors who I will read whenever a new book comes out. I found Charles DeLint by means of a happy accident. I had picked up a BAG full of books in a used book store. Apparently, at some point, I had reached for one book, but wound up taking "Moonheart" instead. I didn't notice until I got home that I had this extra book. I set it aside and didn't give it much thought.
Some time passed, and I was out of new reading material again. I spotted that book sitting on top of the bookcase and decided to give it a try. Little did I know that one of the best stories I have ever read was waiting in those pages. I was enchanted with the characters, enthralled by the suspense, and ensnared by the NEED to know what was on the next page! DeLint took elements of the old world and wove them around and through the modern world. He managed to combine elements of Native American lore, Celtic mysteries, and good old-fashioned MAGICK! He created believable characters in unbelievable circumstances. This book even triggered my first foray into Celtic music! Thank you, Mr. DeLint!
The sun had been up for a while when I finished that book.
I searched for several YEARS before I found "Spiritwalk". I hated to READ it, because then it would be finished! Of course, I couldn't NOT read it, so I held out until a weekend, got VERY comfortable and started reading. I was certainly not disappointed. "Spiritwalk" pulled me in until I was completely engrossed in the story.
While Charles DeLint is by no means the most prolific author on my bookshelf, he has earned his place as one of my favorites! He is in excellent company, with Dragonlady Anne McCaffrey, Darkover's Marion Zimmer Bradley, the punster Piers Anthony and the amazing David Eddings. There is something very elemental and basic about a story by Charles DeLint. If you have a passion for a good fantasy, do yourself a favor. Find a copy of "Moonheart" and let him ensnare you too.
