I consider myself fortunate to have a 15 month old daughter who has already taken up an interest in books. She loves to spend time quietly flipping through her books on her own or with my husband or myself. Books are a great way for parents to spend quality time with their children.
Many of my daughter's books appeal to her sense of sight only. One of her books which I find really educational adds to that the sense of touch. The book is a Touch and Feel book, published by DK Publishing, titled "Baby Animals".
"Baby Animals" is a children's book that lets the child both see and feel an animal. As you flip each page of the book a different animal is shown. Each animal displayed has a body part that feels like what that part would feel like on the animal if the child where to touch the real animal. For example the baby elephant's ears are made of a rough material, made to feel like a real elephant's ears and the ducklings tummies are soft and fluffy like a real duckling.
The animals that are included in this book are rabbits, elephants, ducks, calves, and gorillas. Each page invites the child to come and touch the animal shown. For example the page with the gorillas says, "Tickle the furry baby gorilla."
The book itself is very durable. The pages are made of cardboard, which is really important if your child is still young enough to want to rip the pages of a regular book. All of the pictures are large and in color and the print on each page is in large letters. The book is very reasonably priced and can be bought for $6.95.
I really like that this book takes a child's imagination and learning process one step further. The sense of touch helps a child to understand that all animals feel different. I recommend this book and think it would make a great gift for anyone who has a toddler.
