As much as I enjoyed Angel Souls and Devil Hearts, which is the second book in the series, I didn't really care for this one. It seemed more like the first book with weak organization and a weaker plot. The plot seems underdone and quickly written. It seemed to me that there was so much more that this plot could have become. The novel seemed way too short, and too many of the whys, and even some of the hows, were left out.
The new characters, Kevin, Nikki, and Kuromaku, did not seem as developed as the previous characters like Will Cody.
The plot is that Hannibal's vamps are out to take out the shadows, while terrifying the human race. In a bad strategic move, Hannibal sets all the old superstitions back in place thus handicapping his vampires. But Hannibal has a drug that keeps a vampire from changing and from healing, although he does not use it in the final battle, which is never explained. Peter and the shadows set up camp and protect New Orleans, which is the scene of the final battle. Peter also has gained new magic, from living in H**L. The magic does strange things, splitting his humanity, from his demonic self and his divine self, causing him to become human once again. This is another one of the things that is not really explained. The whole book seems to bypass all the relationship subplots that made the second book so good. The whole plot seems a rush to the final battle, which is over in a three or four chapters. This book could have used about 100 pages and some depth. Its not bad, but its not the quality I expected after reading Angel Souls and Devil Heart, and in my opinion you can stop reading the series after it. I would not recommend reading Of Masques and Martyrs.
